Sperm Whale Oil

This is what was used in Automatic Transmissions in the early days.

I used to have bookmarked some links, last time I tried to link to sites the sites were gone. The gist of the sites:

Sperm whale oil was superb in lubricating, and preventing rust and corrosion under all sorts of conditions and climates.

Sperm Whales of course being the source and with changes in attitudes and practices , a new source of the fluid was researched and sought out.

There are some oils from plants that closely resemble SWO, such as the one used in the Making of Ballistol.

Laboratory was the other, meaning making ATF just as one refines motor oil.
Ironically, all ATF from its "conception" has been "synthetic" if one were to actually see how it was "made" to be as close to SWO as possible in its properties and performance.

Dexron differs in friction modifiers that Ford F type - just the way the transmissions themselves are designed to work. Dexron has the closest properties of SWO.

Perhaps another search would find these links and references. Personally I asked some Chemist types and they said their families, have used ATF in oilers for general lubrication since before they were born - from up North where it gets really cold, to down South where things get really hot.

As a link mentioned, ATF will have a smell, if it offends you "NyeOil" is really close and does the same thing - see a auto parts store.

I was advised to not buy "synthetic ATF" , simply because of the fact , the "regular" ATF is synthetic enough, and no need for paying more for a bottle that says "synthetic" with additional refining, and other additives I do not need.

I paid a $1.28 for the last quart of Havoline Dexron II . Mine is in a Lighter Fluid container with the flip top.

I save these lighter fluid containers, great for ATF, or Ballistol. Lighter fluid does a good job only for my Zippo :) also for cleaning and degreasing parts, getting sticky gooey stickers removed from scissors, papercutters...etc.

I have been assisting with folks with Cancer, and other health problems, such as Asthma, Repiratory problems, Allergies, and sensitive to things from anesthesia from surgeries, appendectomy to knee surgery.

Many are using Ballistol for obivious reasons and concerns - being non Toxic.
Many are doing what was done forever, soap and water - really hot water to clean guns...Blackpowder shooters still do, and museums are full of nice looking guns taken care of with hot water, and no fancy gun lubes.

Food Grade Mineral oil is used for Cutting Boards and Knives. Non Toxic, does not turn rancid like vegetable oil [ Olive is the best of these oils] and not expensive at all.

Folks have used Ballistol and Food Grade Mineral oil forever on Pocket knives and never once worried about cutting an apple for a child - anyone to eat.

I made a mistake once and because of that mistake my Mentors & Elders voices came back to remind me of some lessons I had strayed from. So I investigated.
Chemists, some with Engineering degrees, and PhD's "educated me". I survived chemistry, the math stuff is what I hard time with.
Looking at CAS #'s one can tell what is what.

Just like medical terms " Little Johnny abraded his patella" huh?
Layman's terms " the boy skinned his knee"
*grin*

Many of these Spec sheets and sources are not going to reveal trade secrets for competition reasons. Makes sense. Still many products are re labled and sold as being "specific" for a purpose.
Wallet Flushes perhaps. All you have to do is add scent and dye, dye being the more expensive.

One popular old time product that baffles folks - does in fact have Chlorine in it.
Ever notice how slick bleach is when used?
Ever notice how it causes metal to rust? Not good when used in engines, transmissions or - relabled gun product.

I know for a fact and am sworn to secrecy - Some products some buy are made by a company, oh their product is great, in fact better than the ones they make for folks private label and folks pay for the logo and the name.
Company don't care - they make more money this way. :)

There is one old time product I had to ask about, I grew with it. There is a Liquid and a Spray version. This product is "a best kept secret" I was told as it really does work, and does not hurt engines or transmissions or fuel systems , does not have chlorine and works great for removing carbon and all- no it is not the one in a red bottle.

Funny part is that product is also re-labled for a Car Mfg and sells for more, and real popular with one in particular group of shooters.

Yeah I knew my Mentors & Elders were smart, just being human I make mistakes.

"Young'un, if it sounds too good it probably is".
"Some folks would buy a cow chip if marked down 50%, or advertised by a Actor, or Sports figure".
"Some folks just feel better paying more for something".
"Only reason some folks got more that I got - they owe more than I do".

Older I get the more I realize what I don't know.

More I wished I had tape recorded these Mentors & Elders as well.

--Kids wanted some containers for "stuff" , stuff like crayons and pencils, and knick knacks, but the Box store wanted $2 for cardboard ones [cigar boxes] and $5 for plastic ones [one kid had one of these and hinges broke]

Other kids with bikes - got a sticker shock on what the Bike store wanted for a bottle of Bike oil. $12 for big bottle, and $8 for the smalle one.

That is a lot of money for a kid to spend out of their own money.

"Uncle Steve, you got any ideas -please."

Nice to be the "Adopted Uncle" - I get to pass forward as the Mentors & Elders did to me.

Tobacco Places I buy smokes, gives me free Cigar Boxes, different sizes too.
Kids used printer paper, brown paper grocery sacks and construction paper they already had.
A Catholic Father gave me a bunch of stickers...the kids had a ball making "stuff boxes", even made some for elderly folks in a rehab center, a way of thanking the Father.

Used and empty Lighter fluid containers, I put Dexron ATF in. In old empty plastic bottles of eye drops I put some in as well.

Had some labels and stuck these on with what is - in the event Posion Control needed to know.

I told the kids about Denny Hansen sharing with me them itty bitty Tobasco Bottles are great for lube - but - they are glass and they will not use these, okay to give mom and dad one for a surprise.

Kids obeyed and gave parents and adults these iity bitty Tobasco bottles with ATF.

Often times we humans spend too much time worrying about what is not important and not enough on what is.

We clean a bbl to death and mess up the crown - never thinking about the extraction or trigger, or action, or chamber.

Just my thoughts and experiences - all I can share anyway.

Steve

My vote is Tri-Flow. Contains Teflon to help plate sliding surfaces, penetrates well, also works as a cleaner, withstands high temps and pours well at low temps. It's like $40 a gallon though. Ask a motocrosser what they use on their chains. A lot use Tri-flow. It's a PPG product. What I use.

No offense Steve, but I got a little glassy eyed reading your post there; so I went to one of the links. May I summarize, sir?:

"Recommendations: Employ ATF (automatic transmission fluid) as a small arms cleaning agent, and follow with 20 weight synthetic motor oil as a lubricant. Until a commonly available alternate copper solvent is identified, employ a commonly available commercial copper solvent such as Hoppe’s Number 9 on firearms intended for a high degree of accuracy.

A bottle of each should last a lifetime. Good thread, dudes. THanks

Break Free CLP
Homemade version of Eds Red.

Sometimes it gets a little chilly in my neck of the woods, and neither of these get stiff or sticky in the cold, nor do they just burn off in the warmer weather.
