Hello all,
Recently my grandfather passed away and left me a fairly signifigant chunk of money, and I was thinking of how to best spend that for me to remember him by... I went ahead and squirreled away about half of it in IRA and stock accounts, and figured a gun would be a good "fun" thing for the other half, since I don't tend to sell guns, and generally if cared for they last pretty much forever..

I want to have a nicely rounded gun collection and the only category i'm really lacking in is that I don't have an assault rifle. I'm a huge fan of 1911 handguns, and it seems with the military record, and availability of options the AR15 is sort of the rifle equivalent.... so.. I'm tentatively looking for an AR, but I'm not a huge fan of the .223 for this app. I'm thinking more of something with short range stopping power. .50 beowulf, 458 socom, etc. Are there any other big heavy slow calibers I should consider? Do these calibers present any difficulties with frame strength of the AR?

Also, does anyone make an "out of the box" 50 beo, or would I have to buy a AR and convert it?

For reference my total budget is around $2000.. is this a doable thing for that? What brands are better/worse etc?
Thanks!

You don't want an "Assualt Rifle", you want a semi-automatic AR. :banghead:

Welcome to THR.

My Alexander Arms upper was under 750 bucks new from my dealer. I did find a complete matching setup on gunbroker for $995 NIB which is a steal! It is still on so run a search if you are serious about it!
It is a Riot to shoot and feeds out of standard AR Mags ( I mod the lips slightly for better feeding reliability) although Mag Capacity is compromised (about 1/2) I think it would be my choice against Zombies!

My Beowulf was $1144 with an Ace stock, free float barrel, an additional 10 rd mag (comes with a 7 rounder) and shipping. It came with no sights and I've put an Eotech 512 on it for another $319. It's a hoot of a gun, but to be honest I'm not sure Id want it to be my only rifle. I'm pretty sure it'll worry a zombie, though.

I have a 30-06, 30-30, M44 Mosin, and a 870... so I'm pretty well covered on variety of calibers and rifles. What is a 500 whisper?

Also, just curious, what is the general opinion on AR vs Springfield M1 Socom?? Not talking caliber here, but just in general. I do like the versatility of the AR, and the ability to get various caliber conversions for it..

I just sort of want the rifle equivalent of my 45 1911... platform flexibility, great stopping power, reliable, etc..

I see on gunbroker a DPMS .50 and a Alexander...
about $100 price difference.... does either brand represent a premium over the other as far as frame/components, etc?

I've got the AA upper in .50 Beowulf, sitting on a DPMS lower. As I recall the upper was around $600, and the complete lower about $225. I think there is a significant difference in the Alexander Arms lower, but they do say they put a good trigger in them rather than a standard milspec trigger (this is a good thing).

6.8mm Remington SPC might be a better all-around choice, as the .50 Beowulf is a rather specialized close-range cartridgge with a trajectory like a rainbow. Lots of people make 6.8 uppers and complete rifles these days. Or, if you like Alexander Arms, another option would be 6.5mm Grendel.

That's actually what I like about the 50. I don't really want a long range gun for this application. I was actually thinking about a 45acp Thompson as another choice.

As far as liking an AR15 and not the 223... I like the flexibility that I can have one base/style, and be able to convert it over to several different guns.
However, i've never heard of AR10, what are the differences in that?

hankdatank, that's correct. The AR10 was first. The Beowulf and .458 SOCOM look like great guns. The Springfield SOCOM is very high up in cool factor. It is probably a little heavier than an AR. If I had the money, I'd go with the Springfield.

MMcfpd, where did you get the receiver with the engraved logo?
The cheapest I see a complete AA .50 on their website is $1500.. $1k for the .50 conversion alone.

If I were going to build one myself, what is the best lower to get value wise?
The 6.5 Grendel also looks very impressive... Would I be better off to get a Grendel complete rifle, and then add the .50 conversion? I guess then I'd need a good scope too though.

Never shot one, but they appear to involve titanic BOOMs, shotgun-like recoil, and massive close-end stopping power. In other words, lots of fun.

DPMS is considered a quality builder of AR type rifles ... I'd put them on par with Rock River and Bushmaster.

I may be wrong, but I could swear that back in the beginning Alexander Arms used DPMS lowers before they started making their own.

At any rate, DPMS lowers are fine.
