Yes, that would be a good start. I think you'd be happy with that and the price isn't bad. I have an Armalite AR-10 with a 20" barrel and it's one of my favorite rifles. I don't have their AR-15, but I imagine the build quality would be similar.

If you go to Armalite's website, they are offering 3 free mags with purchase, so don't forget that if you buy one.

I would strongly recommend you look for a flat top receiver with a detachable carry handle or other fixed iron sight. There may be a day when you decide to play with optics, and you'll be severely limited if you buy a carry handle upper receiver now.

MrClean brings up a very good point. You may decide after some point that you want to make it an A4 clone, and put a Knights Armament rail system and an ACOG on it.

I'd recommend the Bravo Company A4 rifle. BCM is one of the top builders out there, and has an excellent reputation for building a rifle that will take anything you throw at it in stride. That, and superior customer service.

Hey Prid - It sounds like that rifle is rigt up your alley, so I'd go for it. I think Armalite makes a good product and if you decide later you want something to timker with, you can always get another one! One thing to check on, I noticed you were in NY, you may or may not have trouble having a AR style rifle shipped there - everyone seems to have different policies on that so just double check their policy before purchasing. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for the input so far...MrClean and Birddog I see exactly where your coming from and something like that BCM rifle seems like it would be ideal.
skwab - I was concerned about that...the armalite has a bayonet lug, pistol grip, flash suppressor, and detachable mag...thats 4 things on the list of "evil things" that you cant have more than 2 of here in NY. So actually no the armalite would not be legal. I need to do some research and find something without the bayonet lug and with possibly a muzzle break rather than suppressor...gah NY

Prid, from my understanding, which is slim, the restrictions up there where you are are governed by the lower, not the upper receiver. If I've heard right, as long as you have a "pre-ban" lower receiver, your upper receiver won't matter.

Unfortunately, that means that you're gonna pay roughly double for a lower receiver; people know that some states require them, and charge accordingly.

I hope THR will forgive me, but one of your best resources online would be the New York hometown forum on AR15.com; they'll tell you everything that you need to know.

Edited to add: If I'm right, then you could just buy the 20" A4 upper from Bravo and be happy.

Birddog
On AR15.com another New Yorker has an AR with "a fixed stock, buzzed off bayo lug, pistol grip and a COMPENSATOR - permanently attached(which looks like a flash supressor but does not reduce the flash any)."
Would this be possible to have someone do to either the Armalite or the Bravo?

Yes. You could install a semi-permanent compensator if your local laws don't allow/limit the use of a flash-hider.

edit: regarding cutting off the flash-hider, it could also be done. Fixed stock is also a very easy swap/choice.

Also, this thread would be a good read for you: http://www.ar15armory.com/forums/Legal-AR15s-NY-t37312.html

It may be a tad out of date, but most/all of the content should apply.

I can tell you this; my PWS FSC556 compensator is classified as just that, and not as a flash suppressor or hider. You could order the upper from Bravo, take it to a gunsmith, and have them swap it out, and pin it to the barrel.

As far as the requirements of NY; you'll have to ask those guys. If I said anymore I may get you in trouble!

Hi fellas. Don't want to derail this thread, just a quick question...

How rare are pre ban AR's, and how much is an unfired one worth?
