The Bersa/Firestorm 9mm is also in your buddy's price range and from what I hear they are pretty good. They also have an "Ultra Carry" that is a little smaller and designed for better carry. Just another one to put on the list. Lifetime warranty for original owners.

I would stay away from the Sigma. I owned one for a few months (as my first auto) and the trigger does get better after 500-700 rounds, but even then it's still not great. I ended up trading mine for a Bersa Thunder 380 and I can't even begin to tell you how much better my accuracy got going from Sigma DAO to Bersa DA/SA.

If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't have wasted my time with the Sigma. Was it a good gun? Yes. Did it go bang everytime? Yes. Did it have any FTE/FTF in 1000+ rounds? No. Although it was a work horse, the trigger is enough for me to at least try and persuade against it.

Just my two cents...

RIA ?

Can't believe no one brought up the Rock Island Armory 1911 yet....

could be had for 300~400 depending up on model.

Ruger SR9s are under $400 too aren't they? You can be a REALLY wise trader and do what I did... Turn $30 into a BNIB G19 :p

I did the same thing except it was a one hundred dollar knife into a Ruger Redhawk .44mag with case, holster, and ammo. :D
