The CW9 is a joy to shoot. I have shot 500+ rounds from the gun with no fatigue or issues. Range session are normally 50 to 75 rounds.

OP states NIB. If you are going to include used guns then about 25 other guns are come into play.

You left out the Zastava EZ9 can be had nib for $300, i love mine it has been very reliable for hundreds of rounds. The ATI 92C looks like a good deal to i am very tempted to get one seeing how a nib Beretta does not go under $500.

I love my Ruger P95, and can't recommend it enough. You'd have lots left over for mags and ammo.

I would also look more at the SD9. Seems like SW set this gun up specifically to be a "house gun," since that seems to be your purpose. Front night sight is a nice to have.

Poor folks have as much need and right to own firearms as anyone. It's unfortunate they have to choose from a list such as this though. As far as I'm concerned, the only ones that might be worth dragging home would be the Smiths.

Well...in my neck of the woods, I couldn't find most of those for under $400...but I'd say his list is pretty darn solid. THe SIG 2022, the Rugers, the Stoeger, the Khar...all of those are great guns...I would take most of them over the S&W Sigma.

You must be joking. I'm a LITTLE iffy on the Tauruses but still consider them to be "okay", but other than that, everything else on the list are completely viable choices.

I have owned many sub-$400 pistols, including the KelTecs (not on your list), the CW9, the Rugers, and the SP2022. Of them, my clear favorite is the SP2022, followed by the P95.

For <= $400.00, I would go with the Ruger Sr9(c) or the P95. Both have very nice triggers and both are great.

P1/P38 are at fairly decent prices right now...$260.00 ish.

he said NIB, otherwise we can bring in milsurp stuff, those $299 smith 5906's that CDNN, police trade in glocks, etc.

If you plan on carrying it, I cannot say enough about the Kahr CW9.

For a home and range gun I would seriously consider the S&W 5906.

**I am editing this to add that I agree that the CZ 75B is a fantastic gun, but I didn't recommend it because you said you didn't want to stretch your budget. I certainly understand your reasoning, but if you do decide to stretch it then my pick would be the CZ and no reason for a penny more.**

I have to say that I never had a problem with the S&W Sigma SW9VE that I owned. The trigger pull was long, like a double action revolver, but I learned how to shoot it pretty fast, and it was reliable and pretty accurate.

That being said, the SD9 looks like an improved Sigma. The rail is picatinny, not weird S&W proprietary, and it has a front night sight. Also some kind of different trigger (which has been a consistent complaint about the Sigma, but the trigger on mine felt great right out of the box).

Both Sigma and SD9 have the same angled grip, which felt fantastic in my hand. The grip is ergonomically better than a Glock, although I bought a Glock 19 gen4, I actually preferred the Sigma style grip.

I'd say go for the SD9, should fit your needs nicely.

At that price point, I really believe the SIG SP2022 or the Ruger SR9 (or SR9C) would be my choice.

Got my NIB Block-g26 for $478. OTD at a gun show :D

don't know about your local shows but all you may need to do is save another 80-bucks

The Stoeger (Beretta) Cougar is one of the finest handguns available for under $400. Ive owned two & have never had a failure of any kind. The Beretta Cougars sold for $700+ in the 90's, now you can own the same exact gun for almost half that.

I would go to a gun shop or two and at least hold the guns you are considering in your hand. See which one feels the best to YOU.

I also suggest you only look at the guns/manufacturers with the best reputations for reliability.

Lastly - a $299 used S&W 5906 is a heck of a lot of gun for the money. All stainless steel, cheap mags, very reliable. A little heavy for all day carry, but being all steel, it will last forever. I've got several 3rd gen S&Ws and they are all great guns.
