Go to gander anyways. At least you can go fiddle with with their stuff and jot down the prices on rifles you like. The gander I used to go to had pretty horrible prices, but it may be different from location to location. If you know what rifle you want just call and ask for the prices. Ever think about buying off a forum?

Go to http://www.sportingarms.com and do a search for the rifle you are looking for. They seem to have pretty good prices across the board, and that will give you a baseline to work from. Call Gander Mountain on the phone and ask their price on the same gun, and you'll get some sense of whether their pricing is reasonable.

My first centerfire was a Marlin 336 in 30-30. I still think that was the best damn purchase I've ever made. There is nothing that rifle can't do inside of 200 yards that I need to be doin'.

I've been thru boltgunaccuracyitis and trajectoryenvy and magazinecapacityfroth, and in the end there's been nothing I've done in the field over the twenty five years since I first bought that Marlin that I couldn't have done with that rifle in my hands.

If you aren't hunting with your .223 i would strongly advise you get a nice thick target barrel for it in whatever model you are considering buying. The thicker barrel will take longer to heat up and the rifling and bore will wear down a lot slower. You said you like to take your time when shooting so with that combination your rifle should last you a hells age.

The only problem with the thick target barrels is once they are hot and its summer, you better have a 22 to shoot while it cools.

No worries about letting the rifle cool down, I have many .22's to use :)

O...My 15yo son just found a rifle that he likes...it is the remington/spartan single shot in 7.62x39. so he wants to go and "check it out" at gander mtn tommorow.

so that means that we may be coming home with two new "toys" tom. ;)

I wonder how my wife will take it? :D

O well I guess what happens happens...right?;)

thanks for all the replies
