First handgun: Sig P220?

besides the calibre issue, wouldn't it be more appropriate to compare the Glock 19 with a Sig 228/229

Not really since the OP is asking about the P220. Just about everyone I know uses the Glock 19 as the standard because of the balance of features. It's really, really concealable at 4.75" tall while maintaining service pistol capacity and performance. That doesn't mean it's any better for everyone; it's just how it's built and it's a very common gun.

i consider the Glock 19 the definative 9mm in the line too...and the only Glock i still regulary use

i think you took my suggestion from the opposite prespective, i think comparing the compact Glock 19 in size with the service sized Sig 220 odd when the service sized Glock 17/22 is so common...at least as an agency issued pistol

Agreed. Apples to apples.

I like the Sig P226 and the Hk USP 9mm from what you have listed.
Great guns !!!!!! Either would be great choice.

Okay, So I've decided I'm partial to the Sig P220. So, does anyone know why they seem to be so hard to get?

My local dealer (closes to my house) says they have been waiting 6 months for Sigs. Is this just B.S? I see a lot of online dealers who say "out of stock" but then I see some who are in stock.

Does anyone have a good dealer who can ship to an FFL?

thanks for everyone's help so far.

Try CDNN Investments (you'll have to download their catalog .PDF and call in your order), Whittaker's, or Bud's. Both Whittaker's and Bud's are online and ship to your FFL. Prices of these three are about the best I've seen.

gossamer,

We're knee deep in SIG in the DC/Metro area. Try some online gun shops and just do a transfer to your local shop.

budsgunshop.com
impactguns.com
summitgunbroker.com <-- very good experience with them

9mm: Now I see what you meant.

I don't have a G17 handy to check, but it's probably about the same size as the P220 with flush 7 round mag.

I think a P220 would be an outstanding choice.

True story. Many years ago I spent a lot of time behind a P220 European model, the one with the heel mag release. One weekend at my buddy's cabin a friend of mine who had never shot a gun in his life asked to shoot my 220. He is very slight in build. We stood on the front porch of the cabin and he took aim at a cinder block well over 100 yards away well down a hill. It was a difficult shot. He hit the cinder block dead center splitting it in half. I told him to do it again and he not only did it again but three or four more times squarely hitting chunks of the block as they became smaller and smaller.

A few months later that friend showed up at the cabin with a brand new P85. This was shortly after they came out, a time when some of them weren't such great shooters. Of course, he couldn't hit the brood side of a barn with it. The gun wan't that bad, but the P220 was that good.

The SIG P220

a most excellent choice, bar none~! I've owned and carried a West
German (German proof marks) SIG .45 caliber P220A since 1988; and it has
NEVER let me down, or had any issues. It was my duty weapon as a LEO;
and upon retirement, I retired it as well. It still looks and shoots as well as
the day I bought it; cuz I gave it a lot of T-L-C. Most LEO's don't take as
good care of their weapons as they should; but I'm an exception to this
rule, always cleaning it after each use, lubricating as needed, and wiping
it down with a silicone gun cloth after every single shift. I'm a firm believer
that if you take care of it; it will take care of you in time of need~! ;) :)
