First Handgun, What was yours? Mine was...

Well, many many years ago, when I was young, dumb, and poor...

My first handgun was an Iver Johnson Young America in 22 Long. I paid $30 for it at an auction. I'm not sure which end was more lethal. The timing was off and it would spit lead out the cylinder gap like crazy. I shot it anyway. Like I said, I was young and dumb. When I got a little older and wiser, I sold the gun to Numrich for parts.

First handgun that I ever fired, watched my dad shoot it from the time that I could toddle along on camping trips, watched my dad carry it on countless hunting trips. Before he died it was the one and only thing he placed in my hand and said "I want you to have this".

... and my kids see me carry it on countless hunting trips, they watch me shoot it from the time they can toddle, and it's my number one tool for introducing new shooters to the sport. It is my highest hope that I too can pass it on to someone who will cherish it as much as I and my dad did.

S&W 686+ with 6" barrel. Figured it would be the only one, so wanted a dependable all-around firearm.

That was 10 years ago and it has since been joined by others as well as a shotgun and M1 Garands.

Colt Woodsman .22 LR 6" barrel...Still have it...Used it to teach my 5 children and now it's being used to teach my many grand children...

My first handgun purchase was a pair. S&W model 13 3" barrel .357 magnum and a Beretta Jetfire .25ACP. Wish I still had them.

The Model 13 whet to the first wife when we divorced and the Jetfire I traded to my brother-in-law for a Minolta flash meter when he quit the photo business. I've used the flash meter a lot more than I'd ever have shot the Jetfire, but I don't do much serious photography now.

Lots of .22 LRs

I recalled a bit more of getting the S & W
Model 18. In a nearby larger town I would
window shop on family shopping outings at a
Sporting Goods/Pawn shop. I was eyeing some
of the used ex-WWII handguns. WHen I got
enough for the P-38 for $35. ( 1964 ) I got my
Dad in there and showed it to him.
THe dealer got it out of the case then he
took my Dad aside as I was hadnling it
The gun dealer did well imo suggesting the
S & W Model 18 in .22 LR. I got a lot more
shooting out of it than the 9MM ammo would
have cost me, that's why my Dad matched
what I had saved so I could afford the $ 78
for the Smith. He called it an early xmas
present

Ruger MkII Standard Auto. 179.00+tax. Has had so many thousands of .22s through it, I couldn't even begin to count. Was my only gun for years. Has had one part go out, the recoil spring guide -- and kept functioning perfectly in spite of it.

They sent me a new one, gratis, when I called to inquire about buying a replacement.

First owned: Ruger Mk I Target with tapered 6 7/8" barrel. Still have it, though it's been retired.

First purchased: Ruger Security Six, 4" stainless. Wish I still had it.

On Duty Service Gun: S&W Model 10
Off Duty/BUG: S&W Model 36

Still have and both and will never sell either one.

S&W K-22. Was in 1950 when I was 14. Lot of saved quarters. Guess it was a "straw" purchase as my Mother had to sign for it. Still have it and use it all the time. Nice how they fit all the parts back then. Where the crane closes to the frame, the joint is just about invisible.

9mm Luger (war trophy), purchased with a box of cartridges, in 1950, for
$15, those were the days.

Oh, I neglected that it had matching serial numbers, 98% bluing and the hard shell leather holster.

I sold it in 1960 for $75 when newly married and money was tight.

The ammunition, pistol and first wife are long gone.

Sometimes, the best you can do is one out of three.

About 1980 - a Browning BDA .45 ACP with decocker. Mag release on the heel. Very reliable, but there just weren't any accessories or parts widely available. I traded it for a New 1911 Series '70 Gov't model.

Three, by inheritance:

1) S&W 'Highway Patrolman' 357 Magnum- 1950s, 3.5" barrel, LNIB
2) Colt Detective Special - 38 Spl. - ca. 1935, 2", 90%+
3) Colt Banker's Special - .22LR - ca. 1935, 2" 95%+

Because they are of sentimental value, all three are now Safe Queens.

The first revolver I purchased was a GP-100/6", ca. 1988. The first semiauto I purchased was a S&W 41, HB, ca. 1988. After buying a S&W 52-2 also in 1988, I purchased my first 1911--a Springfield Army blued 1911A1, 'NM frame.'

Mine was a Smith & Wesson Model 586. Bought it new in the mid 80s. Think I bought the flashlight around the same time and still have them both. Not exactly an optimum concealed carry package. It wears the original grips now.
