Well, I picked it up last night. It's a definite mix master from a pawn shop. I'm no expert, but I've been reading this forum for a couple of months while deciding on a purchase. Here is some info from a field stripping.

Receiver: Underwood 1.362 million (this looks pretty early)
Barrel: Underwood 2-44 (replacement I would guess)
Front Sight: Later type with stamped wings, marked EU
Barrel Band: T3 marked JW
Rear Sight: T3 marked JAO and numbered
Trigger Housing: Marked ST
Hammer: Marked I.I on Right side, T on left
Stock: I cut RMC in slingwell, low wood, GAB (I think) rebuild mark on left side, early Rock-Ola recoil plate
Handguard: two rivet, deep groove, only prominent mark is two overlapping semi-circles
Operating Slide: marked PI on inside, numbered on outside
Bolt: flat marked IO (or OI) with a sideways 2 on the operating bolt

I need to clean it up, but It seems to be in good shape with little muzzle wear. The stock was finished, poorly, with polyurethane or something like it, so I might be able to see catouches if I strip that off.

I'm going to clean it up and post some pics. I'm really happy to pick one up and feel like I did OK on the price ($500).

Let me know if there are any other marks I should look for while I have it taken down for cleaning.

I'd love to read comments from you folks who know a lot more about these great little rifles. Thanks

Good stuff. Sounds to me like you did more that alright on the price now that the CMP is out of them.

Looking forward to the pics.

Here are a couple of quick pics.

The sling and IS marked oiler were a surplus store purchase.

These little things are a lot of fun to shoot, surprisingly accurate, and easy and cheap to reload.

Wow !!! She looks super. Check muzzle wear by inserting a M1 Carbine bullet into the muzzle. If the bullet is swallowed up to the brass then you could have some accuracy issues.
