I am obviously a new member and I am somewhat new to firearms. I was raised with general gun safety but never really 'got the itch' until recently. I am very interested in military surplus rifles and I am planning on purchasing a newer tactical styled rifle as well; something not an AR- the Honda Accord of tactical rifles. (Saiga .308 and PTR-91 is where I am stuck).
Anyhow, my first rifle purchase was a Yugoslavian SKS about 2 months ago. Before finding this website I had never shot the rifle longer than 50 yards- I am not a hunter and that seemed like it would fulfill any practical shooting requirments. Alas, I decided to take the SKS to the range today to fire at 100 yards. I have no training; I have read a little about firing techniques but I am a complete novice.
Anyhow, here is my target; Yugoslavian M59/66 SKS @ 100 yards with iron sights and Romanian surplus ammo. 20 rounds fired, 17 hits. The first shots were at the bottom right of target; then we went to the top right. After that I stepped them down and got 4 in the first circle.
Conclusion: I know that the is a far cry from a target rifle, but I feel confident enough now to hit something man sized at 100 yards. Binoculars are so necessary; making adjustments and seeing their effectiveness is so much better than firing off a bunch of bullets and then going to see where you hit. LOL.
Range highlight: Range officers collecting other peoples brass to reload for themselves (and sell at the gunshow...haha) and helping a guy with another Yugo SKS that wasn't ejecting properly; his gas cutoff was set on for the grenade launcher.
