Hey there everyone,

I just got back from the local outdoor range with my "new" yugo SKS.
I say "new" because even though it is probably 30 years or more old, it has never been fired before me!
This rifle for those of you who don't already know....is a blast!
I shot a total of 140 rounds, combination of wolf/WWB.
No issues what so ever...fed and fired every single round and
talk about accurate...i am very impressed. This is the first rifle I have owned/shot since I was probably 11 years old....can't believe I waited this long!
My first time shooting the SKS and I was hitting the target with almost every single shot..from about the 50 yard mark...my target was a 8.5 x 11 inch size
and I was shooting with just the iron sights on the rifle , no scope.

The recoil on the rifle which shoots the same round as an AK-47, the 7.62 x 39mm, is nice a very enjoyable round to shoot. It has a nice punch to it.
If any of you were thinking of getting an SKS...I can say whole heartedly...just do it. I got mine locally, and paid a little more because of it(about $250 including tax/fees for my yugo 59/66 with grenade launcher and bayonet/night sights.) But I did not have to spend any time cleaning it...just went straight to the range and let her ripppp!
If you do get an SKS...the YUGO SKS does have a more quality build to it..
it is meant to last and has a very nice wood stock....I'll be refinishing that shortly...

Anyhow... I am very happy with my purchase and hope this helps anyone who is on the fence about it.
Later...." :)

I had much the same result with my new Yugo. A very nice rifle for the price. Of course it was a gateway drug to my AK, but it's not really the rifle's fault. :)

YES! Another converted to the cult of 7.62x39. Congrats on the purchase, just a heads up, start saving for the inevitable AK purchase.

I love my yugo. I got one of the unissued ones with 8 pounds of free cosmoline, cleaned it up and put probably 15+ coats of linseed on it. It smells wonderful and looks like a goddess next to my Norinco.

Welcome to THR. I have two SKS’s and I agree with you. They are real fun to shoot. You might want to make sure your bolt and firing pin are clean. SKS’s can slam fire if the firing pin gets stuck in the bolt. Check out this web page for lots of SKS info –

Hope the firing pin channel is free of cosmoline. Take the bolt out and see if the firing pin moves freely. If not it's probably gunked up and will need to be cleaned. Getting the pin free can be a hassle as the retaining pin is jammed in there something fierce. I used a vice to press the retaining pin out. Once the bolt is disassembled spray it out with Gunscrubber and you're good to go.

The bolt on my SKS was impossible to disassemble, I literally hammered a hardened steel punch flat on it and the pin didn't budge. What I did was I got a can of spray-on brake cleaner, put the bolt in a container and sprayed it until the bolt was soaking in brake cleaner. Then I covered the container and let it sit for 15 minutes.

The goal should be that the firing pin will extend if the boltface is facing down, and then fall back down on its own when you invert it. After you're done soaking it, take it out and let it dry, the brake cleaner evaporates almost instantly. If the firing pin is still sticky, soak it again.

Warning: make sure you're upwind of the brake cleaner, it'll dissolve your lungs as easily as it dissolves cosmo.

you just got to love them

i own 11 sks,s china, yugo, russian, albanian, romainan, sks sporter that takes ak mags i love them all neighbors sometimes think i have full autos

Best thing I ever bought for my Yugo was a Tech-Site . If you're at all used to a peep sight, this sight is money well spent. I can't say enough good things about the product or the man that manufactures them.
