Well, I have always wanted a chronograph but never really could justify the cost for one. Today, I went to a city wide "yard/garage sale" for our little town. The first booth I went to had a brand spanking new ProChrono Pal unopened for $34. I snatched it up and now I can't stop patting myself on the back.

Anybody have any good garage sale stories that are gun related?

Little different - a farm auction. I bought a Western Auto-labeled Marlin 981 for $53.00. It was obviously a work gun - bluing gone, a light rusty patina all over the gun, and scratched stock - but it shoots phenominally well. I've gotten my money's worth and a whole bunch more out of that gun.

    c. 1990, IIRC. I was in high school.

I had $50 on me. I bid $45, someone else bid $50. I asked Dad if he had any cash - he had $3. I asked if I could borrow it if I won. He said yes, so I bid $53 (auctioneer rolled his eyes at me when I hollered "Fifty three dollars!"). But no one else bid again, so I got the rifle and paid Dad back when we got home.

I threw the scope in the junk closet and found a 2x7 Nikon for it. Loaded 120 gr speer on top of 43 grs of IMR 4350.

    Absolutely awesome on whitetails.

I really like garage sales. All you have to do is ask. I have also bought some nice Lionel trains in H/O and O scale for darn good prices.

Not at a garage sale, but I got my Lyman #55 powder measure for 35 dollars. There were a couple of grains of powder (actual granules, not weight) in there so it's been used. It doesn't look used. Decapper assembly for my lyman die for $2. Not bad, but it isn't a super either.

Wow, you guys are lucky. I've rarely even found anything vaguely firearm related at a garage sale...

I have gotten alot of crazy good deals at garage sales. So yes its great for me but in a way more than a little sad. Most of the guns listed above came from garage sales at small to mid-sized farms in rural areas of Kansas. Most of their kids have moved to town to be closer to work closer to the mall, closer to soccer practice. They have forgotten their roots forgotten what it was like to be a small boy hunting with a .22 or shotgun. They now have no interest in hunting, their friends and tv tell them that guns are bad and mean certain death to all that look upon them. I have purchased more firearms and got permission to hunt more land just by going to garage sales more so in rural areas with my kids. The boys see a farm pond down behind the house and are asking to fish before we meet the owner. I think alot of the older folks just want to see their old guns go to a pair of young boys that cherish hunting and fishing rather than see them go to their own kids who could care less. Great for me even better for my kids but a sad state of affairs all the way around.

Got an almost new in box 1966 vintage S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman last year for $260. Did not even look like it had a box of shells through it.

An Estate Sale run by the extended family of a fire arms enthusiast last fall.

I picked up a custom leather range bag FULL for $20.00
What was it full of? AK, AR, and 1911 mags.

10 Ammo cans full of ammo for $10.00 each.
    .40, 30-06,.45, 7.62, 12g buck, .44, 30, 22, 9mm, and some random oddballs stuff in the other.

30 gallon rubbermaid full of reloading gear, mostly dies for $20.00

30 brand new goose decoys in boxes for $20.00

And a bunch of old trapping gear for $10.00

Sounds like a great deal, of course it was!!

The saddest part was I also ended up with his blackbook of guns and serial numbers in the reloading mixed box. The family told me all the guns were sold to ... Gander Mountain, 2 days earlier. 47 guns in all. They were bragging to me that they made $5,000.00 selling his guns. There was nothing on that list that was worth less than $500, and most everything would sell for near a 1000 if not more. Sad sad sad

Helped a friend run a garage sale and she said, "Hey, you reload. My grandfather had a bunch of powder and primers." Presto, free powder/primers along with a free lunch.
