Being that you have kids running around with guns, who you also suspect are targeting your residence, I'd consider the situation "escalated" and prepare accordingly. At least, realize it could get more brazen and uglier.
Keep the police informed. If they send the same officer repeatedly, get his card and take the time to shoot the breeze (in a friendly way, of course) while you have him there. It will take months of calls, but it will eventually happen that these people will get the scrutiny they deserve, and it will then happen all at once.
I would recommend against anybody using the word "gun". If they're already in the house, and she's cornered, it wouldn't take but a minute for them to find a flammable liquid, dump it out, and light a match on their way out. Why escalate before you have to? I doubt these kids are so inclined, but you never know.
Even the kind of frail, sickly woman you find only in Poe stories could handle an m1 carbine (or equivalent) well enough to protect themselves in a pitched situation like that with just a little practice. I'd recommend wifey has access to some small carbine while at home, and a CCW piece outside it.
