You really have to go to a shooting range and try.

My recommendation is try a 1911 in 45 ACP and 9mm and better if it has a short trigger, a hi-power and A walther p99 will also fit your hand.

Just curious, how tall are you? Just trying to get a feel for how big your hands are.

Or you could measure your fully outstretched hand from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your middle finger. I have short fingers and measure only about 8.5" according to the above, but the M&P40 grip with the default medium backstrap fits just fine. I use the small backstrap, however, because the smallest member of my family, who is only 4'11" tall, has even smaller hands that measure less than 8", and she can reach the trigger just fine.

Revolvers are certainly worth looking into. One of the revolver's biggest advantages is the ability to really customize the stocks to suit you. Sure, some autos have changeable backstraps, which is always nice, but this isn't nearly the same thing as what can be done with revolver stocks.

Agreed, although the M&P's backstraps also change the palm swells, giving larger hands a more comfortable, secure grip, and smaller hands something they can handle, at least. Obviously revolvers, 1911s, and other single-stack pistols are also worthy of consideration, but the only way to know is to try them out personally.

An original, Smith & Wesson model 10 .38 caliber revolver with a 4" barrel.
It can be had with issued small walnut grips, for persons with small hands.
Not too much recoil and muzzle blast; yet enough power to get the job
done~!

I have found the poem for my wifes valentines day card!

++1 on the revolver. Hard to beat a 'K' frame S&W .357 in 6 shots. If your hands are too small for this, try the 5 shot 'J' frame in .357. I would go for the Mag. chambered gun, for the extra power, if needed down the road.

The 4"-6" .357 Mag revolver, starting with shooting .38's, is simple, reliable and accurate. I'd have said a .22 revolver but you want it for home defense too -- its the way to go and you'll never outgrow. Most people would say that if there were one handgun/caliber they could have it'd end up being the .357 revolver.

If you get a 9 mm you can afford to practice with it... and get good enough to protect yourself and your family. The 9mm is in most opinions the smallest capable and effective home and personal defense round.

I personally love my new CZ p-01. It is as pure of a shooter as I have had the pleasure to shoot. Here is how I carry mine with me daily.
