I took my son and his buddy from college to an indoor range a few days ago. His friend had never shot before so I introduced him to my 1952 Mosin M44 carbine.

After I showed him the basics he settled in for the first trigger pull. After the shock from the recoil of the 7.62 x 54R and the huge fireball, he was hooked!

I must say that it's fun to add new kids to the ranks! Awesome!

Do they now flinch? A few shots from a medium claiber rifle is fine to generate interest, but for teaching newbies how to hit something, nothing beats a .22.

That's funny. Whenever I take folks shooting for the first time, the first rifle I have them shoot is an M44 with some Hungarian heavy ball. It's stout stuff. "There, it's pretty much downhill from there." I tell 'em.

I don't do this to scare them. I warn them full well in advance. But I find it dispels the irrational recoil fear in a lot of new shooters. Call me crazy or heartless.
