1). Take a FL CCW Class.
2). Get your fingerprints taken.
3). Complete Application.
4). Mail in.
5). Wait.

Mine took 60 days from date mailed to date recieved.

My understanding is that Florida is pretty open with what training they accept, even to the point that they take a NRA handgun course certificate.

I did have a friend who is a military vet use some of his paperwork to prove firearms competency, and he did not need to take any course to get his FL out of state CCW.

Let's see if I remember this...

Request the packet from the Dep't of Agriculture

Get fingerprinted at the courthouse using the included forms

Send in everything they ask for, including proof of training/CC permit

(Note: Be absolutely sure you fill everything out correctly. I didn't, took an extra couple weeks)

Wait a couple months, maybe less.

The lady was extremely helpful and nice, so no worries there.

I think the most difficult part was fingerprinting. A sherriff did it, and he wasn't too keen on citizens getting permits.

You've gotten good advice from others, but I'll add this one other thing. Supplying your Social Security number is optional even though the form says it is mandatory.

I simply included a short note that said I value my right to keep my SS number confidential. I also blacked out my SS number on my DD214 form which I supplied them as proof of firearms training. My application went through with no problem.

I do the same thing (don't supply SS number) when I fill out the 4473 Form to purchase a gun. Never a problem so far.

They will accept the following:
  • Completion of a State authorized Hunter Safety Course (Florida or any other state)
  • NRA Firearms safety or training class
  • Firearms safety class open to the general public provided by instructors certified by and using curriculum approved by the NRA, Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, or Florida Dept of Agriculture
  • Law Enforcement, security or private investegator firearms training class
  • Presents of evidence of experience through participation in organized shooting competition or military service
  • Is or has been issued a FL CCW or a CCW from a Florida County (does not count if revoked for good cause)
  • Completion of a firearms safety course conducted by state or NRA certified instructor(s)

question on the military service part. I am still active. What do I send as proof, a copy of my ID card?

What they really want is the DD214. I've never been in the military. Did they give you anything that said you completed firearms training, and if so, can you get it without a major pain in the ass? If not, you can use a hunter's safety class certificate, or get an NRA instructor to certify that you compete in some sanctioned match like IDPA, IPSC, Bullseye, CMP.or something else the instructor will use to vouch for your safe handling.

Get verification of training that satisfies the training requirement. The application lists acceptable documents. Make a photocopy to send with the application as an original cannot be returned. Persons serving in the United States Armed Forces may submit a copy of their Military ID Card to satisfy the training requirement.
