(FL) Officer Killed At Football Game

A penny dropped from the top of the Empire State building will not put a hole in a person's head or punch through a car hood. It will only leave a tiny dent. This myth has been debunked on "Mythbusters" several seasons ago.

It is not the speed of it falling, but the mass. Most bullets have weights significantly greater than a penny, therefore, expect more damage to flesh, bone, and property.

I stand corrected.

I was right about the 300 feet per second, but I was wrong about it breaking the skin. 300 feet per second with a 150 grain bullet will impart 30 foot pounds of force.

This is enough to break the skin.

I am not sure about the lethality of it.

300 fps is BB gun velocity. Of course you have a larger projectile.

I would not want to get hit by it.

Well first you have to find someone that can or will fire a shot in the air at an exact perfect angle for the bullet to travel exactly perfectly straight up.

There are more than a couple of people who have been killed by bullets fired into the air

Interesting reading

"The physics and lethality of firing bullets into the air has been discussed several times here on THR. Do a search."

Thanks for the tip. I am indeed going to do a search.

Sorry Joab. I apologize for not just saying your implications that this might have been some high school graduate with a gun are wrong and implying anything about your character. It seemed you were taking the "they will give a gun to anyone" theory for this incident and you were attempting to prove this by stating they would hire anyone. It seemed interesting that you would ignore the entire bottom half of the requirements and I didn't factor in that you would simply breeze past them as the job posting wasn't that long of a read. Yes it is true a 19 year old could be hired, but they still need to have the firearms requirement and they have less than the 4 years this officer was working to complete the academy. I am sure this guy was properly trained, but did he follow his training and procedures? That is another question. If he did following his training and procedures, how is the system as a whole flawed that might have contributed to this incident. I would guess having a bunch of armed uncovers about without the patrol officers being aware of who is who would be a big factor. Or again, it was just Murphy's Law and sometimes you are just screwed.

I gotta agree with Glenn Bartley's observations. Coupla you guys are either doing drugs, or just spend a lot of time fantasizing and practicing "magical thinking."

I prefer to just call it THINKING...period.

Guess I'd just like to come up with some explanation for why this type of thing could happen instead of just acknowledging that a cop made a mistake with his weapon and got killed for it.

The federal boys do NOT go around enforcing STATE alcohol laws.

True enough. They have their own set of alcohol laws to enforce. Not to say they won't come to your community...they will. I also didn't realize that a separate agency of the state of Florida investigated alcohol related crimes.

Is it common for State agents to investigate campus illegal drinking around there?

So far, I see no justification for Mario Jenkins actions.

I thank god that Dennis Smith was on scene, and responded quickly enough to ensure that Mario was unable to kill anyone. I hope for the speedy recovery of the student who was shot.

Wouldn't the uniforms be aware of an undercover working the area.

On NYPD Blue they have a "color of the day".

LEOs, Any truth to any of thatthat?

yes, there is in fact a color of the day in the NYPD. every officer, both uniformed and UC when they start their tour is told what the color of the day is. some where on their body the UC/plainclothed officr will have that color and be able to display it. most times something like a bandanna on the head, a wristband, or a rag hanging out of a rear pocket will sufice to slow down most officers from shooting at each other.
the only exception is Deep UC guys doing buy/bust type work. these guys will have their own shadow team that will take care of them.

most of the plainclothed guys I've seen don't have it in open view until something goes down, but pull it out right away and have it in their hands to make it visible to anyone looking.

and Yes, standard practice is when you go into an area UC or plainclothed you will notify the precient where you will be working. So when the word goes out to the uniforms that you are in the area and someone yells "I'm a cop" there is a pretty good chance he actually is.

pretty sure there are other major police forces out there that use a similar system.

So far the news is reporting that there was no coordination meeting prior to the event

I have another question
If the goal of the operation was to curb underage drinking, wouldn't a visible uniformed police presence have been more of a deterrent

Borachon: Ever heard the old saw, "Hit dog hollers?" ;) No names were mentioned in my post that you quoted. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and just attribute the silliness of your "theories" to "magical thinking." ;)

The BATF&E worries about the manufacture and interstate distribution of alcoholic beverages.
EVERY state has an agency that oversees that state's alcohol laws. Usually called the ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control) or some such catchy name.

So yes the Florida State Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco would be investigating underage drinking anywhere in Florida.

And I still maintain that a "warning" shot fired into the air is a stupid thing.

The pictures show Mr. Green Shirt perfectly dry. I do believe that is conclusive proof there was no beer thrown on him.

This bleeding kid with the gun held to his head looks almost like my youngest son. Treat my kid that way and I won't even hear your reason. :fire:

I'm 100% with the k_dawg on this one. Welcome to the boards k_dawg. :)
