Flare gun stopping power?

What do you think a charging bear would do if ya shot one of them Dragon's Breath's at it?

Hmmm hand load (very little powder) and #7 shot in a flare gun…anti snake round?

I am tempted to get one and do some controlled experimentation in my backyard laboratory BUT seriously, this stuff could be dangerous! I have a healthy fear of ending up as a candidate for the next Darwin Award and I hope you all do to.

>>Its a (aproxx.) 2" to 2-1/4" shell. Headstamp says 'Orion' and 'White Meteor', and is sealed with red sealant.

Without forensic analysis, its obviously a SG primer. Very centered and no rimfire characteristics to it at all. I hold a standard SG shell also. Its the same primer, very easy to see.<<

There is flare ammunition made to fire in conventional firearms, I think that is what you have. I've also seen .38spl. flare ammo.

But, I still say that the 12ga. flare pistols will not fire conventional ammunition. If they did they would be subject to GCA 68 and NFA and about 19,998 other laws.

As I type, I'm holding a 12ga. flare gun manufactured by Remington Arms. The firing pin is noticably offset to prevent the use of firearm ammunition.

Thats weird. I bought this flare ammo at the boat shop with a flare gun. I bought extra flares at the same time of which is the one I saved. (we gave the Flare gun to FIL for his B-day/boat.)

I never meant to imply that flare guns would fire conventional ammo. Anyone whos ever handled one and in his right mind wouldn't try. They're pretty light weight.

I dont think the flare gun I bought was a remington. I guess theres lots of different stuff floating around and we should be careful what we have and buy.

Does your flares have nonconventional primers? Can ya post a pic?

I've done some experimenting with flare guns in this respect as a result of my job (forensic firearms examination); the consensus is that the vast majority of actual flare projectiles are simply too light to be considered a truly lethal projectile, but that's not to say that I'd want to get in the way of one. During testing, we had several 12 Ga flares bounce off of cardboard boxes at ranges of less than 15 feet. Most of the flare guns I've seen up here would chamber and fire a standard 12 Ga shell, but would be so badly damaged by the process that your only option afterwards would be to throw it if you missed.

To SDC Thank you. There has been much talk and little knowledge. I used to occasionly do forensinc photography for Conn State Police. Always thought that kind of stuff was neat.
