Greetings folks, I am finally freeing myself from the bounds of NY State gun laws and taking up residence in WV.

I am looking to find out any hitches in the transfer of my firearms (both long gun and handgun) from here to there.

Anyone know if I am required to transfer my long guns FFL -> FFL? Handguns?

Any former NY folks find out/learn about fun hitches in the system when trying to leave?

I plan to swiftly apply for my CCW permit in WV as soon as I am able (took 6 months to get my CCW in NY and I do NOT want to be without again).

Just looking for some general knowledge from the friendly folks around here, I'm sure I will be calling my (soon-to-be) local sheriff to ask about details before I pack up the moving van.

Now if you could get a couple million others to leave maybe they would get the hint.

"not pistols or automatics dont worry about it"

Actually chevy that's why I'm asking, as I do have a number of handguns on my NY State CCW.

Funny thing I found out... actually shocking as far as I can tell, I can write a letter to the local Judge and request that I be able to keep my CCW permit.

So I was pretty sure for all my rifles and shotguns I can just pack them up and go, but as for the handguns, does that seem about the same? I didn't think a FFL would be needed since yes there is no ownership change.

Assuming these are not forbidden weapons (and assuming you can legally own them)...

You are not giving or selling or transfering the guns to another person. "Transfer" means that you sell the guns, or give them away, or otherwise grant ownership or possession to another person. You aren't doing that. You're keeping them, right?

Upon moving, you only need to find out the laws in the new City/County/State to make sure there is no registration. If there is no State or local registration or restriction, you simply move. You can do that in America thanks to the Second Amendment.

I live in WV (Harpers Ferry). There is no registation here. CCW is shall-issue. Face to face sales are legal. Open carry is legal. Great place.

the BATF only limits/controls the transfer of NFA items across state lines.

as long as you don't have any NFA items you are moving (machine guns, SBR's, silencers, etc...) you can just toss the regular rifles, pistols, shotguns, into your car and drive as fast as possible out of NY. If NFA items, then you would already know the rules on moving them across state lines, if not PM me and I can point you in the right direction.

You are getting closer!

Toss everything in the trunk, lock your handguns and all that jazz and when you cross into West Virgina, stop and smell the Southern air.

(Hey Porter!)

You're not transferring ownership of your guns, so why would you need an FFL?
It's a reasonable question from a NYS resident. Lived there myself for many years. NY requires a pistol permit to POSSESS a handgun, much less carry it, and folks moving TO NY can't bring handguns into the state until they have their permit and have each and every handgun listed on it. Not so in PA or WV.
