An employee shot and killed a masked gunman as he attempted to rob a Miramar, Fla., restaurant, according to police.

Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues says the employee of Captain Max Seafood restaurant used his own weapon to stop the attempted robbery Wednesday, the Naples Daily News reported.

Rues says the suspect, who was wearing a ski mask and gloves, walked into the restaurant and waved a gun. After an exchange of words, the employee fired several shots and killed the suspect, Naples Daily News reports.

Rues told the publication that no one else was injured. She cautioned people against taking matters into their own hands.

The investigation is ongoing, police say.

I'll get right to the point:

Why is there, in today's world, any question at all about the immediate elimination of this threat? This is disgusting, and on top of being insulting, the fact that we as a world society are becoming brainwashed into passivity where we are continuously told not to fight back.

...possibly saved a few lives.

In light of recent events, I think your assumption quite sound.

The use of deadly force would be lawfully justified, but depending upon the circumstances, it might not be a good idea. There are a couple of questions.

The first is whether the defender can present a firearm and fire before getting shot. If not, trying to shoot would probably not be prudent.

The second has to do with whether the defender can shoot without hitting an employee or customer or someone outside. If the defender is not knowledgeable of how to move to avoid that, it is probably best that he not try taking matters into his own hands.

.
Indeed, I was asking a rhetorical question.

There is certainly more to think about before one might choose to shoot in a more-dynamic situation.

[Edit: Know your target and what is behind it.]

This is why we should train. And keep training. Thanks for the perspective.

I think if you are going to defend your business or your employer's business you should first mentally go through the possible scenarios and practice for them with snapcaps. Maybe you won't think of / practice for every single possible one but however many you think of and practice for will be more than zero.

[police spokeman] told the publication that no one else was injured.
She cautioned people against taking matters into their own hands.
I think the old days of "...we'll let the authorities take care of it...."
in the face of today's immediate & deadly threat is over.

This might be crude, but I say good riddance!

Most likely this is not the robber's first altercation on his rap sheet. The term "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" comes to mind. Wanna rob a restaurant by waving a gun around? Don't expect to be the only one with a gun, and don't expect others to "wait and see" what your intentions are.

Que the motherly "He was a good boy!"

...and then further down in the article itself.
Police on Thursday identified the masked gunman who was shot and killed by an employee of the Miramar restaurant he tried to rob.

Roosevelt Jones, 26, of North Miami, had just been released from prison a few months before he walked into Captain Max Seafood restaurant, 3700 State Road 7, wearing a ski mask, gloves and holding a gun on Wednesday night..........

...."after serving time for a 2008 armed carjacking in Palm Beach County, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. He was also convicted of two charges of carrying a concealed weapon in Miami-Dade County in 2007."

I'm sure all those previous times he armed himself through legal means too.

Kudos for the situational awareness displayed by the clerk. It is going to be in the 80s today here in Florida.

Kudos to the shooter. He might have lives and the tax payers some money. Thee are many occupations in this world. Some are hazardous and could get you killed. Armed robery is one of them.

I hear ya, and couldn't possibly agree more with you.

I recently read a self defense write up that was organized and being offered by our local LE. The entire class is focused on how women can stay safe by taking physical training, and providing information on methods to escape, but not one single offer to train anyone on how to defend their selves with a firearm.

However, some of the LEA's in our state have a different approach and opinion. Some of our sheriff's and police chiefs issued public statements asking law abiding citizens to start carrying a gun for self defense. These intelligent and practical thinking members of LE openly admit, that by the time LEO arrives on the scene, it's usually too late. Therefore, stop expecting LE to save you, you need to take responsibility for you, and your family's safety and welfare. Fortunately, our Gov., Doug Ducey has our back and supports us in this respect also.

I live in the city right next to Miramar (and lived in Miramar until 1987....). Funny thing about this story is it hardly made a ripple locally.... For those who haven't figured it out anyone coming out of prison is rarely likely to be better behaved than when they went inside.... I know there are exceptions but that's what I faced when I worked the streets down here.

I think it's fair to say the robber plopped the situation in the shooters hands rather than the employee seeking out the situation so they could be a caped crusader. The reporters warning is dangerous. Pleading and hoping for mercy from a cold blooded criminal is dangerous. Reacting proactively to end the threat is dangerous. Chose wisely but be thankful for having a choice and mentally ready for either. Hopefully this will help deter other attempts and keep violent crime in the gun-free victim states.

Will be lumped into "death by gun violence".
They probably include criminals shot by police in that number too.

She cautioned people against taking matters into their own hands.

Rant On.

This is the wussification statement of the century,,,
Forget that there is an immediate threat to your life,,,
Only think about the possible drawbacks and lay down.

This way of thinking is only good for the controllers.

Rant Off.

well said, Frogo0207

A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

U won't se CNN covering this.

Why? Because you think there is some big conspiracy about not taking very localized events and making them national news? It isn't really national news. That it made national coverage with USAToday is a bit of a surprise. It did make a couple dozen Florida news outlets, which is appropriate because it is a singular local event about a local worker who stopped a local thug.
