Virginia Beach – - A pizza restaurant employee shot and killed a masked robber who entered the store Saturday night.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Renee Ball said the shooting occurred about 10:08 p.m. at Dominick's Pizza & Pasta in the Timberlake Shopping Center in the 4200 block of Holland Road.

According to Ball, employees had opened the back door to let a breeze in. The robber later entered through the open door and pointed a gun at the workers.

An employee, who has not been identified, shot and killed the robber, police said. No one else was injured.

Detectives and forensic analysts are investigating.

Gunman killed while trying to rob store

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY.com) -- No one ever told Nando Abbondante running a restaurant would be easy.

"I'm here all the time. Thirteen hours a day, seven days a week," says Abbondante, in his native Italian accent.

But for the first time in the three month history of Dominick's Pizza, Abbondante had to shut his doors.

An hour before closing Saturday night, police say a man tried to rob Dominick's while five employees were inside.

"He pointed the gun on me," remembers Abbondante, walking through what happened in his restaurant, "he told me to open the safe."

Abbondante was trapped in his office, a small room at the back of the restaurant. There was no cash inside the safe.

But that's where Nando keeps his handgun.

"When I opened the safe, I didn't have a choice because he would see the gun and shoot me or somebody else," says Abbondante. "I just took the gun, turned around, and shot the guy."

Police showed up in minutes, but the man was already dead.

"Sometimes the owner gets killed. Sometimes the bad guy gets killed.

"This time the bad guy gets killed."

Police have not identified the robber yet.
Another fine example of why ccw is a good thing.

Also a fine example of why not to leave the back door wide open, especially after dark...

Glad to see that the only dead guy is the one who deserved it.

It sure does get hot working in restaurants. Sometimes you take your chances for a cool breeze misANTHrope... Glad this one worked out!

I am going to VA Beach for vacation in August... I may have to stop into this shop to buy a pizza for support for this establishment.

With the correct tools and training, I'm hoping that the criminal is the one who winds up dead far more often in the statistics.

Good outcome, glad the victim who fought back is okay.

If Pizza Hut corporate is still true to form, the shooter can expect to be fired in short order. Jerks.

Indeed it does. But if I had ever propped open the back door of any restaurant I've worked at, after dark, I would have gotten a good chewing out. Seems that those sorts of policies exist for good reason...
