At the range today i shot my new g19 alongside my old g26. Last time i shot only revolvers...and i noticed something that seems to consistenly happen. With the semiautos, i will have some mags where i hit the bullseye and all close to it, then the next mag i will not hit a single bullseye and have flyers all over the place. I just dont get it. Sometimes i keep good tight groups, the the next round will be barely on the paper.
but with the revolvers, i seem to never have any flyers at all. Even when shooting in DA. I may not get the bullseye area everytime, but all the shots stay in the same general area.

Anyone notice this? I cant figure out why with semiautos i seem to randomly get good groups then suddenly start missing everything, then next mag fill out the bullseye, then start getting random flyers. I just dont get it. It doesnt happen with the revolvers, using either crisp SA, or long heavy DA.

Sorry, but it's not the guns. It's the shooter.

I'm the same way if I get a little sloppy. I tend to get fliers with either. But I get more of them more frequently with the semis.

But it's not the guns, it's me getting sloppy with any number of factors related to stance, hold and/or sometimes even a slight return of the dreaded flinch. When I notice it happening I concentrate on getting back to the basics of good form and a smooth pressure build on the trigger and suddenly the guns fix themselves... :D

Piece of meat,

What you describe sound like the shooter is the source of the problem.

Keep shooting till the problem or the shooter goes away.

The first round chambered by hand in a semi auto will frequently print off a little from the following rounds but if you're seeing this at random through a magazine then you're moving the gun off target just a tiny bit (or the barrel is very loose). Dry firing and watching the front sight is the cure. Concentrate on the front sight as hard as you can. See the molecules in the metal.

Oh i know its me and not the guns. Just found it weird that i seem to be able to keep the front sight on target and control the trigger (even in DA) with the revolvers but cant seem to do it consistently with my glocks

Then it's obvious that your hand prefers revolvers. Listen to your hand man. It's all in the hands.

When you know you only have six rounds?

You know sub-concisely deep in your mind it's time to double down on the front sight and make every shot count.

It becomes much easier to spray & pray when you have a bottomless magazine in a semi-auto.

Bottom line?

Shooter, not gun!

You wanna hear about knowing it's time to double down and concentrate?

Tomorrow I'm off to the Season Opener of my club's Speed Steel match. 5 targets and shoot as fast as you can. So revolvers only have one "oopsy" shot and then it's reload time and the score goes down the flusher. You want to see "serious"? Then look at any of the revolver guys with one miss early in the string..... :D

Anyway, rc, your post just reminded me of this. And I'll be shooting revolver in the afternoon match.... :D

For myself I find that the recoil and associated dancing around in the gun seems to feel simpler and more direct with a revolver than a semi. So for me I find it easier to pull through with more focus.

There's no doubt that if I'm going to have a bad day for fliers from getting a little sloppy I'll have more with my semis than I will with my wheelguns.

It isn't weird at all. It is much easier to jerk the shorter trigger stroke of the Glock than the longer trigger stroke of a revolver...because you know it is shorter and you want to make the shot go off NOW

Believe it or not, the finger pressure involved in shooting a revolver double action actually helps to control the gun, since the hand has a job to do other than just holding the gun. I admit to not fully understanding this, but it has been mentioned by many DA revolver shooters. The same might be true for the DAO auto pistols, but I have not seen much mention in that context.

Once you really learn how to hold the front sight on a target with a DA revolver while you cycle the trigger a semi auto is like child's play. Shooting steel plates or pins with no chance of winning (or even placing) with even one miss will make you pay attention. It sure did for me.
