[Flying] Knife in Check-In Baggage

I honestly hate going anywhere with my knife. This November I'm getting married and I'm going to Honeymoon in Vegas for a week. Will I get hassled having a Benchmade Rukus in my Check In Baggage? And secondly while winning thousands in vegas ;) will I get in trouble having any type of knife in the casino's or anywhere? I don't believe I've heard of Casino's having metal detectors correct?

Or would I just be better off leaving them at home?

FLying with checked knife, no problem, though I would place it in the bag where it's not immediately visible.

Valuables in checked bags have been known to just not be there when the bag arrives. It's not a statistically pervasive problem, but also not too small to ignore. I pack certain things in my spare shoes, just to reduce their profile and visibility. Never personally had a problem. Evidently my baggage handlers have all been well-paid.

I've been in may casinos in Vegas with knives in pocket. Nobody asks.

I've been in casinos with tools, including Leatherman, on belt, and never had a problem.

And anything under your clothing . . . stays under your clothing.

We hope.
 
I flew last month and the bag that had a couple knives in it also had a note from the TSA explaning that they opened the bad to inspect it. But everything was still there.

I've also carried a pocket knife in a casino, but did not think to check on their policy first. I suspect the only thing in your pockets they care about is how little cash you have in there on the way out of the place.
 
I always take my knife when I fly...

in my checked bag. Usually there is a pistol in there too. I always duct tape my knife to the side so it cannot fall out if the bag is damaged. I always travel with a hardside bag...chris3
 
Yep. Knife in checked luggage. Usually more than one. I tuck mine inside a shoe and then cram a pair of socks in on top of it. Keeps it from being loose inside the bag. Keeps sticky fingers away from it maybe.

Just remember not to peel your apple with that knife. Might taste like toe jam :)
 
just got back from a week in Vegas myself... took Allegiant airlines, they're not bad at all.

But, they did get into my duffel bag and steal my Bic lighter. They didn't inform me that it wasn't allowed anyhow on my way out of Wichita, KS. Then when I went to check in at the Vegas airport, they told me "no lighters or matches in your baggage, but you can carry matches onto the plane" odd, but ok....

Casinos are very insecure places. I've heard that in Nevada you can actually get a 4 hour class that allows you to concealed carry while you're in the state legally. Why do you want a knife anyway? Seriously...it's not as corrupt of a city as I originally thought... the whole place is like one very large bar.... well, the "strip" is...and if you're not going to visit family, then you'll spend 99% or more of your time on the strip.

Another thing...don't take a shuttle service to get from airport to hotel, or hotel to airport. Seriously, they're a pain in the neck...and they will make you wait. Your best bet is just to hail a cab and spend the extra couple bucks... seriously, it's $6 for a shuttle, or about $14 for a cab....and the shuttle operator went through my business partner's luggage when he threw it in the back of the bus. I know better, I only ever travel with a duffle bag or less. How many pairs of shoes does a man need anyhow?

You'll be fine with your benchmade...but remember you CAN'T lock your luggage, so don't put anything in there that's easy for anyone who handles luggage to steal... and they do run them through some sort of xray, or they would have never found my BIC.

Now, while in Vegas... here's your destination list to consider. Depending on what hotel your in (I suggest Imperial palace due to it's center of strip location and reasonable price) you'll want to check out Casino Royale for the drink specials (if you're not gambling) if you are into gambling, stop by the 25cent slots as soon as you get to your hotel. Just put $5 in the machine and wait for some free drinks.... Caesar's palace seems to be really good about that, and also the dive called "Bill's" has really good drink deals... like 50 cent draws (don't eat at their restaurant though)

Remember, you can drink alcohol freely on the streets in Vegas...so don't limit yourself to the casino's that give you free/cheap drinks.

Also, an important point... Vegas is a really neat city to just wander around in. Nothing is private (unless it's marked) so just walk through any and every building you can. Go where there are less people crowding the street and you'll find adventure for sure. Also notable...there's a nude pool just to the north of the "neptune" pool at ceaser's palace. You can get an incredible view from the second or third floor windows of ceaser palace's Roman Tower... which is, you guessed it, open to the public 24/7.

Oh, and avoid all those hispanics on the sidewalk handing out pornography with a phone number for a prostitute. I took it from the first one, thinking "hey a coupon for a free drink or something!" much to my amazement it was a pretty good looking topless girl with a phone number and a caption that said "girls delivered directly to your room. $39.99!"

Shocking adventure for a hayseed from KS. Probably not so much for the rest of yall.

I used to have that job! It pays $8.00 per hr cash in hand. It was a good way for me to get back on my feet again.

How about take a cheaper knife--bags have a way of going away:(.

Unless your robbing the joint--I don't see that ANY casino will care what is in your pocket provided you have money to lose.

There IS a way to lock your checked bags.

All you have to do is bring a gun along.

Yes, I'm serious. Unloaded of course, and all ammo in a factory-type closed box (not IN speedloaders, mags or clips). If you declare a firearm at the ticket counter, the newest procedure is, you write a sworn declaration that the piece is unloaded on a special red card, sign it, that goes in the luggage, you get to lock it and keep the key. They no longer make you show them the gun is unloaded, apparently that freaked out too many people in line :).

The card itself has special large-print ink visible under X-ray. That bag will NOT be opened, period.

I once lost an expensive knife in checked baggage - TSA had opened the bag, put a "we were here" tag in, but also stole the knife. A decent one, too. Barsderds. Checking in with a gun solves all that.
 
Either take a cheaper knife, or purchase one upon arriving at your destination.

I'd hate to have a $260 knife disappear due to a greedy TSA agent. Remember, they can take anything, and you can't do much about it.
 
Don't underestimate the repulsive powers of dirty underwear/socks! You pack a few of them at strategic places in your luggage, anyone not on official business likely won't want to rummage too long :D Tube of clearly-marked athlete's foot cream near socks or similar might not hurt too...
 
Check in baggage isn't a problem legally

It sure has a high likelyhood of being 'lost' though when whomever goes through it to search for explosives. I dread putting my favorite knives at the mercy of the TSA. I usually get a cheapo model that won't break my heart if it gets lost.
 
Heck, my dad got a Swiss Army Knife on a plane in D.C. on X-Rayed, Carry On luggage. Yep. TSA. Our nation's last and finest line of defense.
 
I really think that the TSA's main job should be to issue pre-fragmented ammunition (that won't pierce the aircraft's hull) to fliers on a one for one basis.
I don't think that idea will catch on though

No problem carrying a knife in the main casino area. I don't like not having a knife with me either.
If you go into one of the nightclubs off of the casino, they do have metal detectors and won't let you in. I dumped mine into a flower pot, and got it back on my way out - no problem at all, and I'm sure security saw me, after all, they see everything.

Good place to hang out is Ellis Island, a little ways off the strip. It has its own brewery, and drafts are a buck. No need to gamble to get the "free" drink, just relax and have fun.

Don't forget to rent the full auto. It's kinda pricey, but WTH? Would you rather the casino get that cash? Go with a friend, and rent different stuff - my buddy had the MP5 and I had the Thompson. We switched halfway through ammo to double our fun.
 
I had my Spyderco stolen from my checked luggage a while back. I now have a couple cheaper but still decent knives that get checked when I travel.

I've been to Vegas a couple of times with a knife in my pocket, and I had to deal with several security types while I was there (I look about 12 years younger than I am, so I got approached and carded probably 5 times a day). None of them seemed to care that I had a knife attached to my pocket.

Make that 3 votes. I am not now nor have ever been any kind of knife fighter, but I have carried a pocket knife around since I was about 10 years old.

I hate flying now.
 
was in vegas a couple months ago, only place i saw a metal detector was right before the elevator up stratosphere, they locked up my benchmade and leatherman and gave me a ticket to reclaim them when i came back down.

(was a week after my 21st bday and i didnt get carded once lol)
 
This is good to know. I probably won't take the benchmade along as it was too expensive, but I will probably get me a Kershaw blackout like I had before thats a little slimmer and less expensive. I'd rather lose 55 dollars than 170.


As far as why a knife in Vegas. I just feel naked if I don't have it with me.
