Flying with CCW in NY

Thanks guys. So as I understand it, it shouldn't be a problem to UPS/FedEx it to myself c/o someone else, until I arrive. Of course, I'd rather take it with me, but not if the consensus is that I stand a reasonable chance of having trouble. Though it bothers me to no end that agencies in my state can choose to ignore Federal laws at their leisure.... Anyway, thanks for the help on this one. Of course, if anyone has used airports in new yorkistan, I'd still love to hear about it. I also assume that the return trip (WA to NY) should be fine to pack in checked baggage, since they wont be screening?

Most people make the mistake of thinking that the bundle of firearm regulations they have to deal with are Federal laws. In fact the Federal Laws aren't that bad. Its the state laws that suck. luckily I live in WV. They are pretty liberal when it comes to gun control laws.

Just a couple of points in addition to the good advice you've already received: I've heard horror stories about the portcops confiscating handguns and arresting persons trying to check them in luggage, but only persons who didn't have a NYS gun permit. Seems to happen to travelers relying on the FOPA who make the mistake of driving from another state to JFK to fly. It might not cause you a problem.

OTOH, as has been stated, if it's legal to FedEx or UPS your handgun to yourself, that's what I would do. Deliver it at the hub, if possible, on the day you depart, and you'll be at your destination yourself to receive the package.

Best of luck. Washington state is beautiful, and has some great shooting opportunities.

Thanks Hypno. If anyone knows more about whether a NY permit should put you in the clear, please let me know. If it wasn't NYC, I'd feel much more comfortable--even though Suffolk places administrative restrictions on my permit, it is a "full" carry permit as far as the rest of the state is concerned. But not NYC; there, it isn't valid. So I'm not sure why the port police would place any special value on a NY permit as opposed to a PA one, since neither is valid in the city. OTOH, I also don't expect any sort of logic from them. Maybe they figure that starting from NY, to LaGuardia, to the destination is more "directly travelling" than going from PA to LaGuardia to destination. Not that they're correct, but I wonder if that's their rationalization. Anyway...thanks for all the info. Hope this discussion continues.

Tomcat,

Its really not a big issue. People check their long guns on airlines all the time. Its the same thing with your hand gun. I actually think you would have more of an issue in WA with your pistol permit than in NY.

Just call your airline's customer service, and have the gun in the correct airline approved box.

Thanks Steve. I have a question (a bit off original topic) that maybe someone can answer. I have a restricted (hunting/target) carry license, b/c that is all that my county (Suffolk NY) issues. I don't carry in suffolk, because of that restriction. However, I was under the impression (both from reading tons of threads, and from NY law) that my license would be treated the same as a full carry upstate (i.e. not Nassau, City, and a handful of other restrictive counties). But the link to the article above seems to indicate that if you are restricted, you are restricted everywhere. Does anyone know? Thanks in advance...
