Wood and steel, you'll notice that the picture submitted by SlamFire1 has a rifle with the original safety lever that is on the left side of the bolt shroud. This type safety had a longer lever that could easily be used with a low mounted scope by only pushing the safety lever half way up. That way the thumb could easily be used to click the rifle off safety. I used one that way for several years.

It is a beautiful rifle. And shoots impressive groups with iron sights.
I am sure the owner of that beauty is more skilled and practiced than I however.
I always found the safety to be unusual with such a long action.
Would you carry this rifle loaded with one in the chamber, safety on?
Or wait to to chamber a round until you were set or getting set to fire"

You will get a lot of opinions about when to put a round in the chamber. I would never put a round in the chamber when I am around other people until I am ready to fire. Like Float Pilot says, safety first. On the other hand it is a different story when I am hunting alone. When I am hunting along I use a Model 70 Winchester with a safety that locks the firing pin and the safety also locks the bolt closed, and I carry 3 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber. Being an experiences hunter I would hunt with an FN DeLuxe Mauser the same way because it has a safety that locks the firing pin. I am conscious about where the muzzle is pointing at all times. I never point a loaded rifle at anything I don't want to shoot.
