My father just handed me down a J.C. Higgins Mauser FN action modle 51 chambered in .30-06. I can't seem to find the right scope base or mounting rings for the rifle. Its my first hunting rifle and i would like to see what the great people at The High Road think. Any information would be greatly appreciated thank you.

I will gladly rid you of the burden of that rifle if you so choose

I would love a mauser action 30-06 just haven't found one yet, I've been very leery of the stock mounted scopes so haven't even tried one, and have not found anything I like either... just commenting that this newbie likes your gun!

Big ring Mauser mounts work fine on mine. I forget the model action, 98 maybe? But google big ring Mauser scope mounts

Most of these rifles were assembled here with chrome lined high standard barrels.

My father purchased one for $39.99 in the early 50s. Today, it shoots MOA with cast bullets reloads or 2 MOA with factory ammo, with a 2.5X scope.

I am in the process of putting a Redfield Revolution 3-9X40 scope on it to see if I can get better accuracy with tuned reloads.

Not the best looking rifle in the world, but as good a shooter as any.

Base for FN Mauser

Check with Brownells the sell the base for the FN action. (Brownells. Com) the regular 98 Mauser base doesn't fit the FN.

Chuy, you have a great rifle and I think that this rifle was made before 1955. I would go with the Leupold standard bases and rings for your rifle. I would personally go with the matt bases and the low matt rings. The ring height depends on your personal preference as well as the scope. The base part number is 50026 for the matt bases or 50025 for the blue gloss bases. The ring part numbers is 49898 for the low matt rings or 49897 for the blue gloss rings. The ring part numbers are 49901 for the medium matt rings or 49900 for the medium gloss rings. Go to ebay and type in Leupold 50026 and you will see the rings. Go to Leupold 49898 to see the bases. If you're not satisfied with the trigger Timney makes a great replacement trigger. BW

Cabelas has them Item: IK-710527. You must specify action make when ordering. Fits :Browning (.264 thru .458 FN)

FN Mauser

Mauser Mark 10

Parker Hale 1000/1100/1200

Sako (round receiver)

Weatherby FN

Marlin 455

Chuy, after I sent the first note I got to thinking about the ridge on the safety lever on the top of the bolt shroud. To accomodate the safety lever you will need the medium high rings. The Leupold standard matt bases will be 50026 and the medium 1 inch matt rings will be 49901. You can find them easily on eBay. Hope that helps. BW

You've received a nice firearm. The early Sears bolt guns are true sleepers. I have a JC Higgins Model 51L and a Sears Model 53.
The 51L is built on a Husqvarna reciever with a High Standard barrel and a walnut stock in 30-06.
The 53 was built by Winchester for Sears and is essentally a M70 in .308. Fit and finish on both are excellant. Many will dismiss these as 'just Sears' guns, but these are sweet rifles that can be often had for a steal.
Follow link for scope bases...

PS.. I have a total of $115 in these two as seen.

Wow guys thanks a lot for all the great information. I just join the site last night and didnt think i would get any feed back. You guys are sh** and thank you for all the useful information it is greatlly appreciated.

You got a super rifle. Rifles like that get passed over at the gun shows as they're not plastic and stainless. Be proud of it!
Oh yeah, scope bases....I have those memorized....Weaver #45 (rear) and #46 (front). They fit all large ring Mausers and are made of aluminum so they weigh almost nothing. I have them on just about everything and mine have withstood years of recoil from cartridges such as a 358 Norma Mag and a hot-loaded Marlin 45-70.

Re: Mauser FN action.....

You have been given good info already and I would say follow along and get the Leupold FN Commercial mounts made by Leupold. They are good quality but also you have windage adjustment in the rear mount which helps get the scope straight on the rifle and then you use the internal adjustment for the fine tuning. Plenty of products are out there for the commercial FN Mauser actions as these are also top quality rifles and were common. Enjoy!!!

Thanks You all very much for the great advise. I really do appreciat all the information.

This is my early model FN Mauser, 30-06. flip safety. Very well made gun, very accurate with my hand loads. Has put lots of venison in the freezer. I got it a few years back for $200 in a low end pawn shop, added a Leupold MK III 3x9 Variable.
