I was thinking about SLR's and 8mm these are the rifles I know of
but I have never shot them. How do they compare for accuracy, reliablity, weight, and price? Also do either one of them beat up brass? If anyone has info on these it would be helpful.

P.S. I read the North Cape book on the FN 49. Very detailed, worth the price (there cheap anyway).

Only somewhat familiar with Hakim (fired it once) but FN49 seems to be slightly lighter/better balanced, less loud (no muzzle brake) and parts are easier to get.

I'll post a review of an FN49 as soon as runt and I get to test-fire the one we just got yesterday.

For quality workmanship it would be hard to beat the FN49. The Hakim is nice and I'm looking to buy one, I have its little brother the Rasheed in 7.62X39 that the Egyptians made in the 50's. Very high quality in a carbine size package. The only thing I dislike about the 8MM Mauser version is that its long and heavy. It has to be one of the ugliest rifle made in the 20th century. Get the FN49 in 8MM first and then get the Hakim.

The FN-49 beats the Hakim hands down. The Hakim is good, but it's still just an oversized Ljungman-style semi. The FN-49, OTOH, is proabably the best semi-auto battle rifle ever made. Had it been adopted by the Brits during WWII when fleeing Belgians brought them the designs, it would have surpassed the Garand in the popular imagination. The one I had would shoot 2" groups at 100 meters with ease. Recoil was fine in spite of its much shorter length than the Hakim, and the sights were nice. My only complaint was that it tore up the brass too much.

From what I've read, the FN-49 was only dropped by FN because it cost so much to make per unit. If you can find one, grab it and don't let it go. I made the terrible mistake of putting mine on consignment, and will have a very hard time replacing it.

I went to the quarry in Olympia yesterday, with a former Oly-Arms employee friend, to shoot his .45's.

Some other folks showed up just before we were ready to go, and I noticed one of them started making targets (milk jugs, lids, etc) dance at over 100 meters, with rapid, extremely controlled fire. He was a little down the line, and I thought at first he was firing an M1A. When I saw him pull out an FAL, I had to go talk to him. :D

After I walked over and said hi, I saw the guy had been shooting an FN 49. I complimented his shooting, and he slipped some 8mm in the piece, and handed it over. Hell, yeah.
The sights are good, recoil is not excessive, and this rifle shoots. I'm getting one ASAP.
