I wanted to share my report on the my new FN FNAR-AWESOME rifle!

After passing on the AR10's (don't like the style as much as anything and they tend to be really heavy), I thought I'd get an M1a-no doubt, cool rifle with heritage to match (too expensive and from all I've read, would have to spend even more to make it shoot...like my FNAR already does straight out of the box!)

Wasn't aware of the FNAR, but wow, seriously, what a great rifle-they are guaranteed to shoot MOA.

VERY accurate, light, low recoil, barrel was slow to get too hot (even with 105 degree day here in DFW!), had it spot on in just 3 shots, and talk about serious firepower! Watch out hogs!

browning shortrac action is well proven. I went with a AR-10 and BAR and the BAR wins hands down as a hunting rifle.

I've been real happy with mine so far. I always get a kick from the guys who say it's too heavy. Too big, perhaps, but with an aluminum reciever, plastic furniture, and tappet-stroke action, it's hard to imagine it being lighter. Unless of course, you neuter the barrel and ruin your accuracy/power. The only thing I'd fix is the return spring, which "twangs" annoyingly sometimes. Not really an issue if my hearing protection is good enough.

I've head of folks replacing the stock with the ShorTrak BAR furntiture, has anyone here done this (and taken photos)? The pistol grip is fine, but it'd be nice to be able to fit the gun in a normal-size case at times.

Mine plays well with the same reloads I use in my 700SPS; very convenient

I have really enjoyed shooting mine, right now it is more of a toy. Very impressed with the accuracy and shoot my reloades very well. Not sure it will ever replace my Tikka 30-06 as a hunting rifle but the FNAR is much more fun to shoot.

I want to put the FNAR forend on my longtrac and wonder if I could source the part on the open market. I suppose I could also just screw on some picatiny rails and call it a day.

PS that bushnell laser rangefinding scope I have on mine makes a great accessory for the rifle.

Push a button and poof.. digital readout while you keep your eyes on the target.

I wrapped a piece of white label around the scope cam, and marked "1", "2", "3", and "4" with . to denote 25 yard and | to denote 50 yard increments within it.

That way I don't have to remember my "clicks" at each range. (I'm lazy, what can I say.)

I have only a few rounds through mine. The most impressive thing to me is the ridiculously light recoil - definitely the softest .308 I've shot, and softer than a typical AR15 carbine, I think.

It's rumored to be fairly involved to take apart and reassemble. I haven't tried on mine. Put some SLIP2000 on the bolt parts you can see and don't worry much more. I'm not hunting with it though, just range use.

Mags cost $50-60 when you can find them. You only need a couple though. The FNAR is not a rifle for charging through a carbine class with the barrel starting to glow - it's a precision (or near-precision for you .3 MOA types) rifle that just happens to be semiauto.

The manual says to ship it to FN every 2,000 (if I recall correctly) for maintenance and inspection. Doing a full disassemble yourself is NOT advised.

Just the takedown / field stripping procedure is somewhat involved and complicated.

Make no mistake, these are precision firearms - they guarantee sub 1MOA accuracy with match ammo out of the box. Mine shoots .5 MOA regularly with handloads. (Never shot a factory round through it)

It's like the "poor man's PSG-1".. given the choice I'd take the FNAR over a PSG-1. (I passed over a chance to buy a PSG-1 once, don't regret it.. much)

Complete disassembly is kind of a project, but not that bad if you take your time and are not in a rush, it is not as simple as an AR is though. I clean mine after each shoot so it never gets that dirty that it requires a complete breakdown.

I bought a bunch of 20 round mags on GunBroker that averaged about $30.00 each. If anybody wants to trade a 5 or 10 round for a 20 let me know.

Regards maintenance, I'm far from any kind of mechanic, but didn't find it difficult to clean after it's maiden trip to the range.....

I took it apart except for removing the bolt-cleaned the face off and it was still essentially clean so I left it.

There's a good video on YouTube showing how to take it all the way apart-as I recall, it took that gentleman about 8 minutes to strip it and put the bolt back in....just not that bad IMO
