I was interested in this particular handgun and went to google it and found a review from this forum dating back to 2007. One persons review stated that the round indicator didn't work and they also found some gouging under the rail. Its been a few years since this review, has FNH addressed these problems and performed the necessary repairs to this model?

Hey 40cal.

I don't have any experience with the 40 cal version of the FNP but I do have the 9mm version. I heard about the gouging on the slide (only on 9mm and 40 as far as I know) too before I bought mine and ended up doing a ton of research on it. First off, yes it does happen. Second, from what I've heard, it gradually happens throughout the first 1000 rounds or so but doesn't get any worse after that and doesn't affect the function of the gun at all. I am getting a little bit of gouging on my fnp9 and I can take some pictures of it if you would like me to. I have about 500 rounds through it so far and just a very slight gouge on the slide under the "P" on "FNP-9". It would take a VERY trained eye to notice it with the gun assembled.

As for the round indicator, mine works fine but it is the 9mm version so i suppose it could be different for the .40.

Let me know if you would like the pictures and I'll get them for you

(I bought my FNP about 10 months ago brand new and honestly have no clue how old it is so they probably could have fixed the problem since then but I don't know)

EDIT: I found the test brass that came with the gun and the envelope it is in says test fire date is 1/15/07 so I guess this probably doesn't help a whole lot. I guess if you still want the pictures just let me know but otherwise, I probably wont be able to help much.

Pictures are always great. Did you call the company about the gouging? If not it would be interesting to hear what they had to say. What's your overall opinion of your gun?

No I never did call FN. It just hasn't really bothered me at all. Overall, I love the gun. Here are the pictures. Hope this helps

I just checked my FNP-9 for gouging - none that I could see. I think these are great guns and are very underrated. The FNP-40 is high on my "guns to buy" list.

The ding or nick on the underside of the slide seems to be just a normal wear point on the FNP-40. It doesn’t affect reliability. As for the chambered round indicator, since it’s essentially a part of the extractor and it’s on the right side of the slide it’s hard to see for a right-hander. It’s more of a tactile indicator, you can run your finger over the extractor and feel whether it’s raised above the surface of the slide to indicate a round in the chamber. Some people consider that to be "non-functional", it's up to you whether that's a problem.

I appreciate the feed back. I've owned a Ruger GP-100 for the last 3 years and I think I have found the semi-auto I want to buy.

Oh Lord.. here come the CZ-boys... ;)

I just started researching the FNP-9's today, and am very impressed with all the reviews I've read... As for the "gouging", if that is the worst wear that I can expect on my gun, I'll take 2 please... :)

What's wrong with the CZ boys? I am an FN an CZ fan actually. FNX9, SS CZ 75 B, and CZ 75 SP-01. All great guns!

FNP is a great line. Well built with decent triggers. I love my FNP-9 USG. One of the best values on the market for a 9mm under $400.

Ive wanted an FNP ever since I first heard about them... playing around with one only reinforced that.

They seem like great guns for what theyre meant to be, and especially for the money. Im a fan of FN although I dont personally own any of their firearms. Gotta start shopping for one of these now too I guess. Not the worst problem in the world to have...

i love my fnp .40 it is the all black 1, i have put 500 rounds through it, no gouge or mar, but it was made this year, it may have been corrected, but i have lots of guns, and this is my favorite!

Anybody own or tried both the FNP-9 and FNP-40? I'm wondering how much recoil difference you percieve? I'm thinking of getting one, don't know anyone who has one, and really don't want to spend $50-$100 to rent, pay for the ammo and the range time to try them out.

It is noticeable.

Its actually almost identical to my Glock 19 compared to my Glock 23.

Its so close though. the recoil is weird, its not MORE but it does have a "Snap" to it. Like most 9mm to .40 shooting
