saw an fn ar at a shop today. 308, heavy, fluted barrel. seemed like an ok gun. price of admission was $1500, but there were no mags at the shop and i don't anything about their availability or price...

any help on mags or comments about this rifle?

also noted some new dpms rifles, and noted the lack of primer availability as well... pallets of factory ammo on hand though. good to see that.

I was not aware that FN sold ARs to the public, or that they made ARs in .308. If that is indeed what it is then I would not hesitate to buy it. All of the M16A2s and M16A4s are made by either Colt or FN.

Just for clarification purposes.....

FNAR has nothing to do with AR-15's, totally different platform.

FN's FNAR is their variant of Browning's BAR which is why it's called the FNAR;)

Think of it this way.....
Browning Automatic Rifle = BAR
FN Automatic Rifle = FNAR

Browning BAR...

If they put the older design stock on this would be Ca. Legal with a 10 round magazine. But then the M1a allready is legal!

FNAR is great. Smooth shooting recoil, very precise groups. $1313 @ Arizona Gun Runners. Mags $44 each 10-rnd or 20-rnd, but currently in short supply - factory says they will remedy that. Here's my HB

fitted with Millett DMS-1 1-4 x 24 scope, Butler Creek V-Grip sling and FN 10-rnd mag.

FN has just a little bit to do with AR15's, they just can't sell to us.

You saw the FNAR.

Is there some kind of stipulation in FN's contract that they cannot sell semi-auto AR-15's for commercial sale?

dcdreamboat,

You ask:
Is there some kind of stipulation in FN's contract that they cannot sell semi-auto AR-15's for commercial sale?
Short answer: "yes".

Long(er) answer:
- FN's not selling AR-15s is probably voluntary, because:
- FN has a BIG share in higher-end guns for law-enforcement (LE), personnel protection detail (PPD), security guard, etc. markets. For these markets, FN has offerings that would replace/substitute for a civilian/LE M16 (i.e., an AR-15). Some think the specialized FN offerings for these markets are significantly superior to an LE-version of a light military rifle, for those markets/applications. [* cringe * - I will now be tarred and feathered and ridden out of town hung from a straight-stock, long barrel AR-15 by the AR-15 crowd.] But, in any case, why would they compete with themselves (i.e., with their specialized LE offerings)? On top of that, introducing a "Me Too" AR-15 to compete in an already crowded AR-15-clone market is NOT savvy business acumen.
- FN may also be a bit politically savvy. The US poster-child for "assault weapons" that antis/libs want to ban is the AR-15. FN mgt probably thinks "Why not just stay the hell away from that tar baby?" It is good for the rest of their businesses....
