FNX-45 Tactical Opinion

I will tell you that while my FN was every bit as accurate and soft shooting as just about any gun I've owned it was the DA trigger that caused me to make my poor decision to trade it.

Given your last post I'd say go P220. I've actually been wanting a p220 match elite for a long time as the thin aluminum grips make real nice with my hand.

They are huge but it holds a lot of big bullets. Very accurate in my hands. DA first shot tended to pull low for me but I really want one. With a weapon light I think it's about as much as a weapon as a handgun can be.

i've had one with the silencerco osprey since they first came out. have a burris fastfire2, which is good, but not as good as an RMR dual that i use on my other pistols. and a streamlight TLR2 which works great.

overall it's an awesome pistol with no mechanical issues whatsoever. it's really large and heavy, which has pros and cons. if you have small hands, you probably want to try one before buying.

17 rounds of 45acp is as good as it gets and it comes with 3 magazines i think.

once you shoot it suppressed and hear how quiet it is and the thump a 230g makes on the target, you'll never want to shoot it unsuppressed again.

getting a holster is a straight up PITA. I had a custom one made that works great, but that was unfortunately a one time deal. These days, I think you should probably plan on making your own holster.

i switched from 45 to 9mm a few years ago and have only shot this pistol once in the past 2 years.

Taliv, I too made the switch to 9mm pretty much across the board. I have, typically, kept at least one 45 just for range work. I had 1911's for a long time but ultimately grew tired of them and now only have 45 in a switch cylinder wheel gun that I can shoot 45 ACP or 45LC out of. Nice, but polished stainless gets to be a pain to clean up after a heavy range session.

I am, mostly, a Beretta snob now, but the SD just has not jazzed me as much as I had hoped.

Soon, time to find a new 45 range queen and I do like the adaptability of the tactical pistols. Really, has come down to the P220 and the FNX at this point.

My only concern now is the serviceability of the FNX. I like to do some light gun smithing and having a pistol I cannot fully disassemble makes me cautious.

The reviews on the FNX are so mixed that it is hard to get a good read on the gun as a whole. I think I like the easy optic add capability the most. I doubt I will ever add a suppressor, I just have no need for one.

Might be less expensive to just get a mount to add optics to a P220 or similar and not deal with all of the headaches around cleaning and maintenance. I really do not like that they built a gun that could not be fairly easily taken apart.

The best holster I found without having to go to a "custom" shop was from BlackPoint Tactical. They make a really nice fitting OWB holster that you can have designed for a standard FNX 45 or the Tactical model and with an RMR. They also make a IWB holster but I don't have any experience with that model. With my BlackPoint holster I can carry my FNX along with two spare mags all day long without getting sore or loosing control of the holster. The fit and shape of the holster is a lot like a KingTuk IWB but on the outside of the waistband.

Personally I don't see where not taking the fire control group out of the pistol is a negative, it simplifies the break down process. The pistol field strips in to 4 pieces with the use of a take down lever and is so simple to put back together that you can do it with your eyes closed. You can't really do any gunsmithing on the fire control group but then there really isn't any reason to unless you intend to do bullseye type shooting. And yet, if you do want to do bullseye type shooting the pistol is accurate enough to be able to get very tight groups with a little practice at controlling the trigger squeeze.

You may be over thinking it a bit. I've owned several Fn-45's FNP AND FNX. Mine have all been GTG. The FNX is the better gun. If you shoot any hot loads the FNX has better chamber support. I didn't see it mentioned but the single action trigger on the FNX 45 is really very nice. it's light and Has a fairly short reset with a noticeable click. Go to the FN forums and read up.
