I've had my first pistol, a 22/45, for several months now and am ready to purchase a 9mm handgun (now that my trigger finger can be satisfied with cheap .22 ammo :D). It will be mostly a range and home defense gun, but I would like to be able to conceal carry it as well in the winter (eventually purchasing an LCP or something for the summer). Originally I was all set to get a CZ 75 but was pretty disappointed with the controls when I handled it in person; also it's probably too big for me to CC well. Now I'm looking at the FNX-9 and I really like the looks of all it's features. I have yet to hold one but it looks like it would fit my hand fine. I'm a little nervous about the magazine and backstrap issues I've heard about, so I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with this gun that they could share, or any other tips/suggestions for what I should look at that would be similar?

It is a nice looking 9. Only two issues I noticed is that the backstrap moves up and down with your finger....not a good fit.

Then the mag has about quarter inch between it and the grip.

The FNX-9 is a good pistol. Just don't get discouraged if it has a few problems with lower powered ammo at first because it is really stiff until it gets broken in and won't cycle underpowered stuff. Leave the slide locked back in between range trips for a while to help with that.

Also, I didn't like the factory sights, they were really tall. After replacing them with AmeriGlo night sights, it isn't an issue.

Times two on the Ameriglo sights.

I own the FNP-9 which is still available, mostly because the grip stippling on the FNX is too sharp for my "sensitive" hands. I've not seen issues with the backstrap on mine, I use the flat one. So far it eats anything I feed it, really a nice gun, a pleasure to shoot.

obviously i will be biased (just look at user name), it is a fantastic gun, the backstrap is not noticeable and the magazine's seat perfectly. have over 3500 rounds thru it, never had a single malfunction, you will not be disappointed.

I think some of the early versions did have some fitting issues with the backstrap and magazines but I believe that has been worked out. I have a FNP-9 and a FNX-40. I really like both guns and only have praise for them - reliable, accurate, great value, good ergonomics, and fun to shoot. I like the controls on the FNX model better than the FNP but they are both keepers in my book.

Thanks for your feedback. Also, I understand that the stainless and black slides are both made of stainless steel, but will there be any difference in one being more resistant to scratches, rust, holster wear, etc.?

I honestly don't know but I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. If you run a gun hard, it is going to get scratches and holster wear. It gives it character.

Own an FNP-9M, I really like the backstrap setup. They slide on, pretty tight so they almost don't need the screw that secures them. Really simple, primitive method for attaching the backstraps. Love it.

I love the fights, they are very low profile and stand out greatly.

magazine and backstrap issues

What issues? The magazine is well made, you get three with the pistol, and the backstraps feel great. I haven't noticed any issues with those two components at all.

I am unaware of any such problems with the FNP. This comment was directed toward the FNX. The backstrap attachment methodology was changed and the mag release was made to be truly ambidextrous and there were some bugs with the early releases.

I just got mine about five or six weeks ago, but it was test fired in April of '10, so I'm thinking it would be considered an earlier example. My backstrap (at least the one I have on) fits securely. My mags do not fall out and do not have to be slammed in or inched forward to stay inserted.

I've only got 200 rounds through it but have had zero problems so far. For as light as it is, there is no more recoil than my other 9mms. I really like this pistol.

I would highly recommend the Glock 19. It can be used for ccw and range use. Plus, accessories and holsters are more plentiful. I have one and, love it! I would also take a good look at the Springfield XD and XDm series of pistols. Don't get me wrong FN makes great weapons. These are just some things to consider. Best wishes,

Evan

An update; I went to the gun store yesterday to see what I'd get for an old shotgun of mine, and he gave me a deal on an FNP-9; $320 out the door for a used one in great condition. I love it so far! It feels amazing in my hand and just really seems like a quality gun. I plan on shooting the heck out of this one and then maybe down the road get an FNX or wait to see what they come out with next :)
