VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY.com) -- A man wearing a mask ordered everyone into a back office, while pointing a gun at them.

That's what employees at Dominic's Pizza & Pasta restaurant on South Plaza Trail and Holland Road in Virginia Beach say happened just after 10:00 p.m. Saturday night.

The owner, Roger Stephens, says one employee was told to open the safe and to hand over the money inside. Instead, Stephens says his employee pulled out the gun that was in the safe and shot the man several times.

Police say the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives were on the scene investigating the shooting and interviewing all the employees who were in the restaurant at the time.

Stephens says this should send a message out to criminals that people are going to protect their property.

If the employees or managers had concealed carry licenses, they would not have been herded back to the safe.

Nevertheless, I had a boss who kept a Colt in the safe, and made sure we all knew how to use it safely and responsibly.

Ants, they don't need concealed carry licenses to carry in their place of business in VA. Just permission. Which this guy should have given before this ever went down.

Protect their property? Someone orders me into a back room, and I'm just thinking about protecting my life, not property. That would be my reason for protecting myself.

Anyway, this turned out well. I'm glad that the good guys lived.

Criminals may not read the black and white often but they usually are part of a large network of friends. At the very least his local community will be safer as the news of the demise of a colleague spreads.

Unfortunately, criminals don't read newspapers, and a good many aren't bright enough to learn from other people's mistakes, anyway.

So true.

Doesnt mean they are smart. Take for instance the knuckleheads who broke into my neighbor's house in broad daylight...on a Saturday...not 10 minutes after they watched me enter my own house.

Stupid...of course I was going to call the police on them.

BTW this happened about five blocks from my home. I am going to order a pizza from them tomorrow as a show of solidarity.
