Is it possible to have a folding stock on a Gas Piston AR? I have been googling around but haven't found anything really. Not that I want one, just curious since w/ short stroke piston you don't need the buffer tube so why not just make a folding stock for easier packing?

Gas piston or DI I don't think you can have a folding stock on an AR. You need a buffer tube and spring which is located in the rear.

there is a modification that is available for it.. I am not sure where to locate it.. have seen it in a couple of threads.... someone will be along to talk about it soon I am sure... i though the same thing as Stchman initially, but i was mistaken.

Even gas pistol ARs still need the buffer-tube/spring. the current gas-psiton ARs simply replace the DI tube and have a piston that rams the bolt, but the bolt still has to knock back into the buffer tube.
The AK-style gas piston requires a taller receiver with the spring above the bolt. Olyphant Arms did it first with the OA-98 (IIRC), but it's Oly. the HK-416, RobArms XCR, and now the Rock River PPS, all have taller receivers with the recoil spring up over the bolt. It's something inherent in the design of the upper receiver

OK thanks, someone just told me that piston AR's didn't need a buffer tube but I thought that sounded kinda bogus. Besides (opening up can of worms) real AR's use DI ;)

Real semi auto rifles use gas piston arrangement. It only took the AR community about 50 years to figure this out.

Touche, good sir. Lets not turn this into another vs. thread though. If it works it works.

So the easiest option would be to find a 416 style upper then? I wouldn't bother w/ that personally. A 16'' AR w/ collapsed stock is compact enough for me. But I do like my buddy's Saiga with the folder, so easy to just throw in the backseat and go.

I just seen one in a gun mag similar to the one GPWASR10 posted, but i believe it was made by kahr or para. had a folding 6 position stock and was much better looking, but still ugly as sin, but i am of the mindset a folding stock AR is silly.

The FN SCAR is set up along those lines. It's not an AR, but there are some similarities. No buffer tube, so the stock can be hinged at the rear of the receiver.

Someone on arfcom made his own piston conversion that has the spring up front like the Scar, XCR, Etc. Then he made a flat pivot plate so the stock could pivot. Very nice.

What about the Z-M Weapons LR 300?

That one has been out for the better part of 10 years now.

Daewoo DR200 is a M-16 / adjustable gas system weapon used by the South Korean military for decades. No stock is needed.

This is my Pistol-SBR ... early style receiver with an ACE folder setup.
