I am interesting in building a folding stock AR. However, here's the catch, I want to be able to use a traditional AR lower, be able to fire the rifle with the stock folded. I know that due to the buffer tube of traditional AR designs, if you have the LAW folding stock adapter or something of the sort, you can fire a single shot if it is already chambered, but then you're out of luck.

I am wondering if anyone makes a piston-driven upper that does not require a buffer tube. Is there a way to close off the buffer tube hole in the rear of the lower and attach a side folding stock?

Olympic Arms builds one, and I am sure there are others. Troy industries makes a shorter recoil system that uses an hk style sliding stock. I developed my own short recoil system similar to theirs to build a pistol and it takes three inches off the tube. But the uppers that retain the recoil system aren't cheap, and getting one that isn't a complete gun is pretty difficult.

I remember there was a guy named Zitta who built a rifle based on a modified direct impingement system. He lengthened the gas key to form a sort of piston that extended into the handguard, then wrapped the recoil spring around it. This allowed him to do away with the buffer assemby and install a folding/collapsing stock. It was offered a while from ZM Weapons as the LR-300, and picked up by Para Ord and produced for a while. Heard they discontinued it and I am not sure if anyone else has picked up the design. IIRC, either could be used on mil-spec AR lower.

You can kludge together something trying to make an AR do things the design wasn't intended to do, or go with something that has the design features you want.

The Beretta ARX is easily fired with the stock folded. Pics and construction details here:http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=777423&highlight=arx

CZ 805 would work too, as would the FN SCAR, but the SCAR is significantly more cash.

+1 on the Sig MCX.

I just ordered one. It has no buffer so it comes with a folding stock. Also piston so that it works well with their suppressors.

Rock river makes a piston ar that has a internal buffer system like an ak. I like the pistol version.
