I am looking to put a folding stock on a single shot H&R that has been cut down to 16" barrel which would put my overall length folded under 22". My question is whether it is legal or not. I cannot find any thing about folding stocks and overall length in IL laws. Everything I have read online has been that overall length is measured with the stock extended and is not easily removable. I would like some advice with sources please.

Thanks,
Matt

I think federally you've got problems... 26 or under is a no-no... plus hopefully you mean a rifle as 16" in a shottie is now a SBS or AOW dependign on stock configuration...
Dont know about IL though

Found my answer for Federal. Overall length is measured with the stock extended. And yes I do mean rifle sorry for the omission. The question remains about IL though. Michigan measures it collapsed.

Thanks,
Matt

Yes I am sure about the federal law. A guy on another forum posted a copy of a letter he received from the ATF this past fall answering the same question. I would post it here, but it is not mine to post. If I wanted to write a letter to someone in IL that knows the answer, who would I right it to?

Matt

Oh and if it was measured collapsed, then why would companies sell folding stocks for guns such as 10/22, AK47, SKS, TC and many more. A lot of those guns are less than 26" folded.

Matt

From Illinois law.

It is unlawful to possess any rifle having one or more barrels less than 16
inches in length or a shotgun having one or more barrels less than 18 inches
in length or any weapon made from a rifle or shotgun, if such weapon as
modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches.

In my experience, the "overall length" is normally measured with the stock extended in Illinois.

Thats all the literature I could find on it as well and assumed the same. Thanks!

Matt

Play it safe, figure it with the stock folded. No use going to jail and losing your rights over something that stupid.

I think I would rather get their response in a letter and do it if it is legal rather than not do it blindly. I am not going to do something illegal. I was merely posting here to see if anyone has ever had the question answered. Who would I ask in Illinois what the laws are? Who would enforce those laws? State police?

Thanks,
Matt

I would look on the ILSP website and see who you can get a hold of to answer this for you.
