So I was looking through the thread here posted by @Toprudder. Just curious if any additional development work on the .429 DE has taken place, as that discussion is nearly two years old.

I contacted Hodgdon to see if they had done any load development, but they said they had not. They did not indicate if they had any plans to pursue it.

I’ll be trying out some of the loads that Toprudder suggested. But I’m also wondering about other powders, bullet weights, etc.

With a 10” barrel, factory ammo pushes a 240 gr. bullet to over 1800 fps. I’m wondering how fast we could push a 180 gr. XTP and still keep it stable. Nothing like having a .44 caliber varmint gun.

If it ever caught on, Hornady might make an XTP-Mag like in 45 caliber for the 460/454 . The 460 is up to 2000 FPS from a 240.

But this cartridge is going to be much like the 45 GAP. Great round to shoot during a shortage. But never be very popular.

I loaded and shot some 240 gr. Zero JSP over 28.5, 29.0, and 29.5 gr. of H110. Average velocities were 1688, 1703, and 1754 fps respectively from the 10" barrel. No excess pressure signs with fired primers still showing rounded edges.

The Glacer Ridge factory ammo I shot pushed a 240 gr. bullet a little faster at 1814 fps. I think I may try to bump this up just a little more.

Still thinking about working up some loads using lighter bullets. I suppose I should break down and get a copy of Quickload at some point for stuff like this.

Wait - you have a 10” barrel for the .429?

Apparently they made a limited run of 10" barrels recently. Not on the website. I heard about it elsewhere and sent them an email through their website a couple of weeks ago. They're only available in black oxide. I was hoping to get one in Brushed Chrome, but I'm pretty happy to get a 10" in any finish. More info here.

Looks like it!

There was a bunch of guys who probably did a "Group Buy," or something like that...
