Do any of you citizens out there carry (or have considered carrying) handcuffs in addition to your weapon? If so, is this discussed in any classes you may have attended? What are your personal views on the benifits and liabilities in doing so?

I am mainly thinking of the armed citizen using cuffs on either an injured assailant or a threat that has been mitigated (or reduced) enough to detain. The obvious danger is closing the gap and going hands on. The benifit would be in gaining control before LE arrives so you would no longer be pointing a gun at the threat while the cops are sorting thing out (likely pointing their guns at you).

Your thoughts?

My thoughts are that if a person is dangerous enough to require cuffs, they are also dangerous enough that you shouldn't approach them to cuff them.

Unless you are a LEO, carrying handcuffs, etc. is viewed as a very bad idea.

Are you trained in the use of the handcuffs?

What justification or authorization do you have to place someone in handcuffs?

To put it bluntly............don't do it. It's a very bad idea and the cons vastly outweigh any pro you may think they give you.

Steve,
I am a LEO looking to see what CCW holders out there think of carrying cuffs.

"What justification or authorization do you have to place someone in handcuffs?"

The courts view deadly force to be the most extreme case of effecting an arrest, so the legal ramifications of using cuffs is much less than deadly force.

Good thoughts so far. I agree cuffing without training is a bad idea. It's not rocket sience by any means, but can (and does) turn dangerous or even deadly when things go south.

There are plenty of threads here on private citizens carrying cuffs. A search should bring them up.

In the meantime I don't really think we need to go there again.
