I've noticed that a lot of times, when I talk to people here and in the "real world" about self defence, a lot of the scenarios that end in you having to draw your firearm assume one of three outcomes: The bad guy runs away (Most favorable), You have to shoot (Second most favorable), or you loose (least favorable.)

For a while, I've thought about the fourth option that we rarely touch on. Imagine any one of the dozens of scenarios that we talk about - attacker with a knife, someone breaking into your house, attempted mugging - and you draw your firearm, shouting "Stop!" or "Drop the knife/weapon!"...... what do we do if the Threat, instead of attacking or fleeing, drops the weapon, and just stands there. Maybe he has his hands up. Maybe he has that deer in the headlights look. The point is, the "threat" is not much of a threat, but he is still there.

If that were to happen to me right now, the best plan I can come up with is to direct him to lay face down on the ground and keep his hands where I can see them, while scanning for any acomplices and I call/havesomeonecall 911.

I'm thinking that carrying some kind of restraint might be really handy in this situation. Either a pair of handcuffs or some of those flex cuffs, maybe even just some big zip-ties.

Now, I have never worked in law enforcement. I have no training on applying restraints to someone in this kind of situation.... but I'm not planning on walking up behind the bad guy and twisting his arm behind his back. it would be much closer to me yelling "Stop! Drop the Weapon!... Get on the ground (throw handcuffs to him) Put these on! Keep your hands where I can see them!"

What do you guys think? Does anyone thats not a LEO carry restraints on them? LEO's do you carry restraints when off duty? If you do carry restraints, what kind and how?

If you don't carry restraints, what can you see with my line of thinking that is wrong? Even though I tittled the thread "Carrying Restraints?", if you have any other methods of dealing with the scenario I've outlined, I'd love to hear them. Restraints are just the method I thought might work in that situation.

Thanks for the input,

Chris "the Kayak-Man" Johnson
