I was issued my PA CCW in Lancaster County in 2003; I have been living in Cumberland County since early 2004; I heard something from a resident who lived in county A and moved to county B and had his permit issued in county A just like me;

He was told by the sheriff in county B that he had to reregister for his CCW since it was issued in a different county than his current residence; is this true...have I been without a legal CCW for 2 years now? What gives?!? Isn't a PA CCW a CCW (exception in Philadelphia county)?!? Do I have to get a new permit all over again?

I am really concerned because I am going to start a job working night shift and commuting to it and want to keep a gun in my car for the commute (to have a loaded gun in a car in PA, the owner must have a valid CCW) until I move closer to where I'll be working in a few months...so I guess I'll have to go through this crap twice...once for now and again when I move!!!

state laws online.

in the pennsylvania code 6100, you will find that:

6109(b) requires a resident to apply in his county of residence.

6109(f)1 allows a 5 year term of liscense throughout the commonwealth, unless revoked (with due process).

6111.4 remarks that the chapter (6100) does not enable any govt or law enforcement agency to maintain a registry by the included statutes. this is elsewhere prohibited.

i do not see a stutory requirement for change of liscense on change of address. your local is inferring this. should you do it? write to the state attourney general, citing these sections, and ask for a letter of opinion. this is a grey area that looks black and white to me, but i'm not the prosecutor.

send your inquiry registered with return receipt, and they may even answer it. keep the answer, and copy the local, either way the answer goes. post it here, too..

Q: If I move to another county in Pennsylvania, what do I need to do with regards to my License to Carry?

A: Your License to Carry Firearms is valid throughout the state of Pennsylvania. You do not need to get a new license with your new address on it. However, you should notify the Sheriff’s Office of your change of address. When your current license expires, you should go to the Sheriff’s Office in the county that you currently reside to reapply.

Real Gun is correct. Even though you have moved, your permit is good for the five years it was issued for.

Thank you for the references and info; this reinforces what my father stated; sounds like the other guy I spoke with was dealing with a person in the sheriff's office in his county that doesn't know the entire ordnance code...happens alot I guess.

I can do you one better; I had a non-resident PA permit while I lived in VA. I moved to PA. All I had to was contact the Sheriff that issued the permit and wala, I have a resident permit. I will have to go to the county that I live in to renew it when it is time to do so.
