It irks me to see an endless number of sun-faded signs on the front doors of businesses which still reference a law which has been null and void since July 1st, 2001. The reference [paraphrasing] is this:

***It is a misdemeanor with a possible penalty of eleven months and 29 days in jail to carry a firearm on premises [some would say even in parking lots] where alcoholic beverages [state-defined "malt beverages" or beer or distilled spirits] are sold for off-premises consumption.***

Is this common in your area? If so, would you be willing to help compile a list of such businesses?

I've talked with John Harris, our hero who runs the Tennessee Firearms Association, to determine if such postings are illegal...he thinks not.

That does not mean that an intentional flouting of the law should be countenanced. I've written letters to local businesses, patiently explaining why such a sign should not be displayed, with mixed results.

I propose a 'registry of shame' for such businesses and their owners; and solicit examples to be posted in this thread.

What I am not saying is that business owners should not have the right or wherewithal to post their properties to discourage carry by legally-licensed citizens. Decisions, and communications, should be adequately rewarded...or punished; to wit, by ostracization or boycott.

If such business owners cannot discriminate between criminals [who by definition ignore existing laws] and thoroughly-vetted citizens [who by statistical abstract are the most law-abiding citizens of the state], let them suffer the just consequences.

What I am suggesting is that such business owners should not be allowed to continue posting signs which are in direct contravention of the laws of the State of Tennessee without feeling the consequences of their actions.

What do you have to contribute?

Glad in MO there are no laws like that. Going into a bar, all they can do is write you a citation if you carry, and make you leave.

Its almost impossible in MO to get arrest for carrying into a building unless its a school or Federal building. Or a public transit Bus. Although the bus part we are working on and hopefully next session thats null. Some people dont drive and need some form of protection

Where in TN are you?

Such signs are rare over here in Chattanooga. (That is rare, not nonexistant.)

Sign

I also have not seen said sign, although that law was referenced in the mandatory training film. (It really needs updating) When the instructor asked "Any questions", I pointed many out obsolete laws referenced including that one. At which time, the instructor advised the class "He (Progun) is correct. Here are the changes since the film was made". That led to everybody asking me how I knew so much. The internet and formal schooling are good for something. ;)

The signs are still around. And carrying into a place where alcohol is served for consumption on the premises is still illegal. TCA 39-17-1305. We've tried to get that changed, but the Dems in charge (particularly Speaker Naifeh) won't allow it. The changes to the statute in 2001 allowed for carrying where alcohol was sold, but not served (i.e. grocery stores).

I'm in the Lebanon area, and I have not seen one around here. In fact, I haven't seen one of those particular signs in many years. Since it is currently NOT a misdemeanor(with valid carry permit) to carry where alcoholic beverages are sold for off-premises consumption, I would simply ignore it. Places that serve alcohol for on-premises consumption are off-limits by statute and do not have to be posted.

If the store owner wants to post his business, as is his right, there is a legal mechanism in place for him to follow. In the meantime, I'm not going to make it easier for places to be posted by bringing it to their attention.

Stay safe!

I have been here a couple months (primarily middle TN) and only place I have seen posted was Williamson County DMV (and that was not to code).

I do wish TN statute was like the 51% rule in Texas - I can't carry and eat anywhere that serves alcohol???

Still, after being in cal it is really nice to be able to legally carry again!

I carry this card in my wallet and something else in my pocket. I give it to the owner or manager of any store or business that needs it.

That is a good card, but I have one objection. In TN, we have a "Carry License" and not a "Concealed" license. While some may elect to conceal carry, open carry is also legal.

I'm often in the Erwin/Johnson City area. I've never encountered one of the defunct "you can't carry here because we sell booze for OFF-PREMESIS consumption" signs. I've seen a few posted places, but no place that's had the CORRECT format and wording.

Mousegun, I LOVE that card - the last line sums it all up: a no-gun sign turns away the GOOD guys while INVITING the bad ones!
