It irks me to see an endless number of sun-faded signs on the front doors of businesses which still reference a law which has been null and void since July 1st, 2001. The reference [paraphrasing] is this:
***It is a misdemeanor with a possible penalty of eleven months and 29 days in jail to carry a firearm on premises [some would say even in parking lots] where alcoholic beverages [state-defined "malt beverages" or beer or distilled spirits] are sold for off-premises consumption.***
Is this common in your area? If so, would you be willing to help compile a list of such businesses?
I've talked with John Harris, our hero who runs the Tennessee Firearms Association, to determine if such postings are illegal...he thinks not.
That does not mean that an intentional flouting of the law should be countenanced. I've written letters to local businesses, patiently explaining why such a sign should not be displayed, with mixed results.
I propose a 'registry of shame' for such businesses and their owners; and solicit examples to be posted in this thread.
What I am not saying is that business owners should not have the right or wherewithal to post their properties to discourage carry by legally-licensed citizens. Decisions, and communications, should be adequately rewarded...or punished; to wit, by ostracization or boycott.
If such business owners cannot discriminate between criminals [who by definition ignore existing laws] and thoroughly-vetted citizens [who by statistical abstract are the most law-abiding citizens of the state], let them suffer the just consequences.
What I am suggesting is that such business owners should not be allowed to continue posting signs which are in direct contravention of the laws of the State of Tennessee without feeling the consequences of their actions.
What do you have to contribute?
