For the nerds: If guns were computers...

Windows is like today's 1911 style pistols. When they started out it wasn't too bad, but over time it has become hung with so many superfluous gadgets that it hardly works, and for the most part is unreliable. Since it is so convoluted its users are often victims of "theft by hacking." The maker really needs to get back to basics.

Linux on the other hand, is a simple, solid, trouble-free S&W model 10 revolver.

(Old Fuff runs for cover... :D )

Windows = 1911: It works pretty damn well if you know what you're doing.

Mac = Glock: Well, if glock made an attractive handgun. So I guess maybe that does make them HK (overpriced). ;)

I've compared Win/Mac to cars too: Mac is a new Honda Accord. It'll get you where you're going, looks pretty nice, and works well with very little maintenance. Windows is a 1968 Chevy Camaro: It's pretty damn awesome when it's running right, but you have to be a bit of a mechanic to own one.

"All I know about computers is that they make good targets." And those laptops are useless. I had 200' of extension cord, but that was hard to lug around all day, so I just shot the laptop.

Windows = Hi Point. Cheap, shoddy, unreliable. Lousy user interface. Gear you hope your enemy has...because it's not much better than an abacus or a pointed stick.

Mac = Sig P210. Pricey, reliable, superb performance. Fantastic user interface. Governments won't issue it because it costs too much, so you buy it out of your own pocket...because your life and career are worth investing in.

This thread is funny to see who the real nerds are and where their loyalties lie. :)

I don't think there is any accurate comparison to an Apple (though several have tried). Something that is uselessly/needlessly fancy, overpriced massively, generally appeals to the trendy/hip/no-nothings?

Maybe a chrome or gold-plated, engraved Deagle? Shooting xtreme shock ammo? Hehe.

I agree on the AR -> windows comparison that several have made. Fussy, but maintain it well and it can do almost everything. Plus it has the most options, accessories and configurations of anything.

I think those cheap emachines and non-name brand workstations can be compared to your average Lorcin/Jennings. Pretty much good for a few uses and throw them away when anything breaks (which will happen, quickly).

Linux is the Glock. Ugly, simple, but dead nuts reliable. Or it could be those IBM/Lenovo laptops. Very simple looking, no fancy designs/colors, but all-business and quite robust.

Dope

Ha Ha!

i was just going to say the AK is too simple to compare to a Mac. i'd say the AK is the 'calculator' of the gun world, and the Mosin Nagant is the abacus, but someone beat me to it.

I'd say the 1911 is the 'slide ruler'

at one time a bunch of people used it, loved it, thought it was plenty, knew all sorts of inns and outs on it...but now most of those users are gone, and not much of that information is retained

I was struggling with who to nominate for the gunnie equivalent of Guy Kawasaki when Mike OTDP took the award by uncontested acclamation.

Nicely put. Who knew there were so many Mac haters out there? Sounds like envy to me. :D

Hey Hawk, I'm just down the road from you in Cowboy-town.

The Jennings J22 would have to be one of those old Atari Cartridge based computers where you had to blow into the cartridge and slot and then forcefully pound the software cartridge into place and then cross your fingers and hope it works.

windows ME would have to be a Smith revolver with a squib stuck in the barrel and the hammer back on a live round. If you want it to just sit there and look pretty it will do fine but if anybody tries to use it things are gonna go bad quickly.

Vista?

What handgun/rifle/shotgun has been introduced in a caliber for which no ammunition was made, did not fit into any gun cabinet currently in production, and weighed 40 pounds unloaded?

This same hypothetical firearm also came with an annoying little man who would ask you questions as you attempted to use the weapon:

"Do you really want to take the gun out of the cabinet?"

"You loaded a magazine. Do you want to continue? Y or N. "

"You pulled the trigger. Press 'Allow' to continue."

Easy:

Mac computer: Mac 10, tec9

Windows: ar15

Linux: ak47

ms dos: black powder pistol
