I'd like to build an LTR some day (although I'm not 100% I would use a 10/22) and understand scopes and slings and free floating the barrel, etc. But I just don't grok spending big $$ to pimp out a 10/22. I guess there are too many other shooting-related things I would buy with that money.

What am I missing here?

The fact that you can shoot MOA or better all day, everyday and not break the bank on ammo cost.

That's why I'm building mine, just waiting for my birthday next week to get it I hope!!!

Because I am one that thinks that you shouldn't be afraid to spend money on the guns you shoot the most, .22's. They don't 'have' to be cheap.

Well, you don't need to strap a light or a laser or an aftermarket stock on a 10/22 to shoot moa. And why not just buy an AR lower and dedicated .22 upper if you want to be tacticool?

No but you do need either a set back and rechamber at the least or a good quality aftermarket barrel.

And why not just buy an AR lower and dedicated .22 upper if you want to be tacticool?
Because some folks would rather just buy a $90 Tapco stock for the 10/22 they already have than an $800 AR. I could've just bought a rimfire AR for what I've got in mine but I didn't want to just buy a rifle, I wanted to build one into exactly what I wanted.....and needed. I also would've spent a lot more money getting it set up the way I wanted. Why do so many think that the AR is the only "tactical" rifle in existence??? There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Well I finally got my 10/22 and it's time to start building it up. I'm already looking at a Volquartsen trigger assembly and a Hogue stock to start with, but my question is for barrel length. I see them in 16, 18 and 20 inch. My end goal for this rifle is to put a Silencerco Sparrow on it. Is there a barrel length that is best for adding the can later down the road? It'll be a paper puncher and maybe time to time small game, but mostly a range queen.

The shortest length is probably your best option for adding a can. The longer the bbl the quieter, but the difference (in a .22LR) is negligible, but the difference in handling (particularly WRT balance) will be noticeable.

:)

Steel bull barrels are heavy, regardless of length. I built my first with a 16" Clark barrel and it handled like a stick of railroad. It was quickly parted out and sold off infavor of something a little more svelte. So if you have any intentions of using this rifle in the field, look into something lighter. I like the Clark mid-weight, which can be procured threaded but Green Mountain also makes an excellent sporter weight barrel. Contrary to popular belief, you don't need a heavy barrel to build an accurate rifle. If I were building a dedicated rifle for suppressor use, I'd probably get a 16" Clark mid-weight as the sporters tend to be a little too light in that length. Or I'd seriously consider doing an SBR and using a 6-10" steel heavy barrel.

Clark also has a handy weight chart for the different barrel contours and configurations.

.22LR high velocity tends to peak around 12-14" so velocity should not be a consideration.

Can't comment on noise with the can but without the can, a 16" barrel is significantly louder than a 20" or 24". Which is why I greatly prefer a longer barrel on a field gun. Much easier on my already-damaged, unprotected ears.

Craig is right about the weight, you may want to look into a Tactical Solutions Al. bbl (threaded version of course), or one of the several carbon fiber barrels available.

:)

Dont have any pics right now but my 10/22 has...
a butler creek 18 inch bull bbl
hogue overmolded stock
a cheapo walmart scope (that I want to replace with better glass)
volquartsen bolt release
oversized mag release
polished internal reciever and bolt
harris bipod
and about a pound or so lead fishing weights glued into the stock for balance

im happy with it lol

Thanks for the input guys, that's exactly what I needed to know. Like I said, this is not realyl going to be a field gun, I'll more than likely put a stock one back together from my parts that I'll have left and use that in the field.

10/22

Hi, I built up a 10/22 a few years ago and ended up trading it for a Colt DS II that I eventually sold also. But I recently had a chance to buy a older ( 1967 ) 10/22 that My B-I-L has had since 1973 for $120. Well I soaked what I could in ed's red and redid the walnut stock using Howard's Restore, followed by Howards Feed & Wax . Topped it off with a Simmons .22mag 4X . I forgot how much fun these small carbines were to shoot. I also ground the bolt release and added bolt buffer. Now it's going to be My 6y/o grandsons' shooter........WVleo

18" a&b barrel

In that case (and assuming it will be mostly fired from the bench), I would go with a moderate length barrel (18-21in.) and not worry about weight (steel bull bbl is fine). Good luck on you build.

:)

No Ruger parts left except the magazines.

Mods are as follows:
Green Mountain 20" barrel
Faijen Target stock
Volquartsen UltraLite receiver
Volquartsen TG2000 trigger group
Volquartsen Machined Bolt
Volquartsen Compensator
Volquartsen Bedding Kit
Mueller 8.5-25x44 Tactical scope
Warne Maxima QD rings

Yes, I could have gotten a fairly nice AR15 for the amount of money I spent on this. No, I wouldn't do it again.

My mods - all on the cheap.

Hi, new to the forum. Adding a pic of my stock 10/22 stainless - synthetic. Made some very subtle but cool mods I think - considering I'm not a "black gun" kind of guy. Did the trigger job, chamfered the bolt and polished up the guide rod, and did the one hand bolt release mod all myself. Frankly, it was all pretty fast and easy with a $3 stone and a bench grinder, along with some scotch bright pads in various grits. If you are reasonably handy the trigger job is extremely easy and as good as you want it to be. Added a tuffer buffer, sling studs, and a short picatinny to the forend after chiseling out a small amount of plastic near the barrel band (used a bit of epoxy on the inside cavity of the stock to give the rail screw a better hold). Added an oversize charger handle and carbon fiber and polymer bipod both of my own design. I sell those on ebay under the user name "powermed" Also have a see through picatinny on top. I epoxied two magazines together which work very well, easy to flip.

My Appleseed rifle - Tech Sights and a 20" Green Mountain bull barrel. Factory hardwood stock that was free floated, except for the first 1" of the barrel which is bedded. The action is bedded, and so is the trigger group. The front action screw has an aluminum pillar. I did my own trigger job using the instructions at www.rimfirecentral.com. The rear of the bolt is ramped and polished to help with reliability - helps keep it from short stroking when it gets dirty or when shooting low powered ammo. Also has a Volquartsen extractor - that solved all the stovepiping issues I had after installing the new barrel with its tight chamber. Before I put Tech Sights on it I had an el cheapo 3-9 scope, and it would put every shot into one hole (5 shots 1/4" or less center to center) at 25 yards.

Cool carbine, ruger66! More than just a rare number too...I see it has a steel receiver and beautiful wood to go along with it.
