For those who carry two handguns....

If I carry a second or third gun it is usually winter and the spares are snubs carried in a coat pocket where they aren't buried under layers of clothing.

different reason for 2nd gun

I often carry a centerfire pistol and a rimfire Single ten with cci Quiets or colibris when I am around my property. I carry the centerfire concealed for the normal reasons we carry - two legged varmints, and the 22 in a shoulder holster, handy for smaller varmints. My neighbors are relatively close and if dispatching a small thing i would rather not disturb them with the noise, if the larger calibers are neccesary, Im not worried about the noise it makes!

I always have a Ruger LCR 38 in the pocket and usually have a bigger gun IWB on the right hip (G26, 1911, or S&W model 10 these days). Some say two is unnecessary/paranoid/mall ninja etc., but honestly if you are unlucky enough to get in a situation where you need a gun at all, a second one may just come in handy. If the first gun jams, runs out of ammo before you've made a good hit, or is snatched, a second could save your life (and has for many).

Also carrying that lightweight LCR in addition to my IWB gun is effortless. There's really no reason not to.

I always carry at least 2. Either 2 Gen 4, G 33's in 357 SIG, or 2 Gen 3, G 39's in 45 GAP. I usually will pocket carry a G 42 as well.
I'm handicapped and quite frankly, I want to be able to grab a gun with either hand and be able to defend myself immediately.
All are totally concealed at all times. Yes, I carry spare mags for each of them too.
You never know if or when Mr. Murphy might decide to rear his ugly head...lol

As always, stay safe.

You kept me from asking what would have looked like an ignorant question. Maybe it still is.

The OP did not mention whether he mostly was asking LEOs/ex-LEOs, or CCW people in general.

i do not carry 2 very often. but when i do it is a Springfield xds .45 acp IWB and a Ruger LCP .380 auto on the ankle. never know what could happen.

Ignition Override is offline Report Post Quick reply to this message

I just asked people in general without foccusing a segment.

In case you run out of ammo, and don't have time to reload, but it make sense to carry something that uses the same mag, now a days, like a glock 17-19, and a glock 26. This way you can still use the same ammo and mags in the small one. Also sometimes I will throw an XDS in my pocket or fanny Pak and , then pull it out of a waistband or iwb. Or while driving have one in a holster under the steering wheel. It's hard to get a gun out while driving unless you thought of it before you started. Especially in cars that are small. I have a 4 door Optima and a Mustang, and there is no way I can even get my phone out in my Mustang.

For 20 years I carried a Sig P220 45 70%-80% of the time as a main duty gun, either uniformed or later in plain clothes. ( The other 20%-30% was either a wheel gun, a Browning P-35 or a Seacamp converted Commander)
I almost always carried a backup gun in an ankle holster or inside a coat pocket. Most of the time it was an old humpback S&W 38 Bodyguard snub-nose(nickeled no less.) that I found in the evidence locker.

Later I started carrying a little Beretta 22 tip-barrel in the armpit of my under the short body armor. It worked better when I had to wear a suit.
I had a velcro closed slit in my dress shirts so I could reach it.

One day when I needed the darn thing, ( knock-down-drag-out fight) the barrel flipped open while I was pulled it out and tossed the live round five feet away. I ended up using it like a brass knuckle. When I got home I tossed it into a drawer someplace. I have not looked at it since.

These days I am a simple country squire and only carry one.
