Night stand in routine.

Dear THR:
What is your in routine night stand pistol? When choosing a night pistol which factors do you consider the most? For example, capacity, accuracy, time tested reliability in your own use, rail for laser/light, etc.

Currently, I have with me all time H&K P30. I chose it for time tested reliability in my own use. Capacity is non issue as I have other weapons handy that are far more deadly than a handgun in case things turn really bad. I do mount a combo laser/light on it, but its a hassle and I do take it off in morning time carry if I am using it in the morning.

I currently use a tuned CZ Phantom as a night stand gun. It wears a viridian green laser setup and sits next to a high lumen flashlight and a spare mag. I wanted something simple, ergonomic and accurate. And, since I have little other use for a duty pistol such as this one (which is too big for me to want to carry concealed), this gives it a nice role to play.

Personally, I wouldn't overthink it too much. I went with something I can leave there full-time, so that I don't have to worry about it being somewhere if and when I need it. I went with a decocker gun so that there's no safety to worry about and just a buttery smooth 6lb DA pull for the first shot.

I tossed my Glock 17 in there. Nothing to fumble with, and lots of rounds. My EDC is a CZ 75D PCR though, and actually it's in the nightstand next to the Glock at the moment.

Well obviously, reliability is key, as well as being able to shoot it accurately. Something I demand out of a nightstand gun though is ease of use. I don't want to be barely awake, trying to fool around with a safety. With both of ours, you just start pulling the trigger.

Glock 21 on my nightstand. Sits in a Safariland ALS (so I can just flick the tab and the holster falls off). Just across the room is an 870.

G17 with a Surefire X400 light and laser, Dawson Precision Tritium night sights and the complete trigger group from a G34. Just got a LE discount G20 SF, once I run a few hundred rounds through it, lighten the trigger, and ad night sights it may become the G17s successor.

I just stick the 17 round mag in my SR9c and lay right side up, barrel pointing away, along side two cell phones, extra mag and a flashlight. A .38 revolver goes in the drawer just underneath.

I've debated long about getting a DA/SA for nightstand duty, but everything about the Ruger is so natural to me now I'll most likely stick with a full size SR platform for full time night stand duty. Just hoping Ruger starts making one in .45 soon!!!

I currently have two choices in my nightstand, a G17 with CT Railmaster laser and hand-held light or G20 with TLR-1s mounted. Either will probably do the job. Also have the G26, just in case one or both of the other two fail.

My wife has a g17 and I have a 40 cal sigma with a some trigger work done. Both have proven reliable. No lights or lazers on the handguns to give away anything. I guess both of us can see well enought with the few green LED night lites around the house to see fine enough. Flash lights are led hand held if needed. .

The firearm closest to my bed at night carries a light and a laser and is loaded to "one button = bang" status. It's got 15 of a big enough round to stop an attacker provided I can score hits with it, and I can do that.

But the two far more important things I take to bed at night are 1) the knowledge that I've taken reasonable steps for security and 2) a rational mindset.

The gun and I will probably never leave my bedroom to check out a bump in the night. If someone is in the guest bedroom, he or she is similarly armed and trained.

Last night it was this Colt Combat Commander in 9mm since I was out of town and this is what I carried with me while away. Didn't switch back as of yet.

Due to differences in work and sleep habits, my wife and I sleep apart most of the nights of the week. When I am in my own room, my carry gun (Kel-Tec PF9) is on the top of the high shelf on the computer desk hutch next to the bed, and my 10/22, with its 25 round magazine, is next to the bed. When I get up in the morning (which is early!), I remove the rifle's magazine and put it on the bed to remind me to stow the pistol away before leaving the house 30 minutes later. When I do leave, the pistol gets locked away and the magazine goes on the stand in its place. The Ruger does not have a round in its chamber. The PF9 is my carry gun only when I'm not working that day. On work days, when it gets locked up, a P32 comes out and goes in my pocket for the rides to and from work.
When we sleep together, the rifle magazine is left out, and the pistol simply goes with me into her room. If I leave her room before the night is over, which frequently happens, I take it with me, and the above routine is implemented.
Sometimes, I'll switch the Kel-Tec into the safe and use another gun, such as my Service Six revolver, but the routine otherwise remains the same.

My M&P comes off my belt and goes onto the nightstand at night. But it's really just a place to put it, since my light is on my 930 shotgun which is accessible from the bed.

My current night stand gun is a Glock 21. I find I can shoot this gun as accuratly as I can any auto that I own, it has good capacity and the time proven .45 ACP round. Its somewhat less harsh in terms of indoor muzzle blast and flash than the 4 inch S&W 686 I used to keep in my night stand. Its actally an older model so it does not have the rail, but for safety and tactical reasons I prefer a separate flashlight, rather than a gun mounted one.

Say what you like about 9mm, under stress I'd rather have 16 rounds at my disposal and it's the gun I shoot and know the best

XDm 4.5 .45 ACP with a loaded 13 rounds of Remington 230 gr. JHPs in the magazine along with my 4 cell Mag-Lite. I have a PRP trigger kit in the XDm that makes it excellent, so I leave the chamber unloaded so I'll have to be conscious enough to rack the slide in the event of an intruder.
