For you 223 bolt guys.......

Looked today, but didn't find anything that jumped out at me. Looked at CZ, Tikka, Howa and a Stevens.

Still Looking...........

Held one of those too. Just didn't fit right. Liked the Stevens better than the Edge.

Viking...

Someone mentioned the H&R single shot...my Wallyworld has them with a cheap scope all day for $297, but that is not a bolt like you asked for...but cheap.

I picked up a Winchester Ranger (Mod. 70) .223 for $299, used. Whattadeal!

Saw a Savage FP10 short-action .223 with accutrigger and scope for $359, won't be there long. CZ's are nice. $550.

Saw a Howa Ranch for $450...how much do you want to spend?

Tikka is nice, if you got the loot...Rem's are cheaper, thy Di*ks, or Academy.

Savage has some nice .223 in standard configurations. They would make a great truck gun/pesting rifle. They are very reasonable for what you get. I believe they are the 11 series rifles.

What do you think about Thompson Center ICON

or Venture

Like the feel of the TC's. From what I have read, they say they shoot pretty good too.

Yes they are, I have TC ICON PH its consistent SUB 1/2 MOA more like 0.35 MOA, but I shoot 308 out of it, my .223 is REM 700 Varmint with 26" barrel and B&C Medalist Tactical stock it shoots same bug-holes with reloads I make for it

I have a Savage Classic 14 in .223 that I really like. Not exactly a truck and tractor gun though with walnut/polished bluing. Of course Savage has syn/stainless options that might be better for what you had planned.

For what you describe as your intended use I'd recommend the CZ 527 carbine. Short, light, handy. Half of these suggestions would be heavier and bulkier than your AR. (Unless it's one of those huge target units of course.)

New kink to the 223 idea.......Of the rifles I am looking at, I may also want to thread it in the near future(1-2 years). All other options still the same.......

JUST A SAFETY REMINDER

It IS SAFE to shoot .223 in your AR chambered for 5.56, but DO NOT SHOOT 5.56 in a .223 caliber weapon. Do not ruin your weapon by using the wrong caliber. On the shooting bench it is very easy to make this mistake. The two rounds are very similiar in appearance so keep the calibers separate at all times.

I vote for the CZ 527 as an inexpensive, accurate and fun .22 to shoot. Their other rifles are an excellent buy also in all calibers.

stevens model 200 - inexpensive, very accurate, won't mind banging it around, blind mag, 22" barrel, very dependable. of course, there are other rifles that will get it done.

I know you said you wanted a bolt action, but what's wrong with a lightweight AR? Sure, it's the same which means you have magazine commonality.

A lightweight AR 20" with a scope would make a good truck/walkabout rifle.

There's nothing wrong with wanting something different, however. I'd go with one of the Ruger Hawkeye rifles with a 22" or 20" sporter weight barrel. Easy to carry and looks right with it's classic styling

I have a stevens that i won in a raffle it shoots pretty good and for the most part is a savage without an accutrigger

if it were me buying a .223 rifle id get the savage but the stevens is pretty good too

detachable mag limits you to basicall the CZ and the tikka. my beef with the tikka is it's built on a long action.

I've got the charles daly mini mauser I bedded. it's a 1 hole gun. nice light 20" barrel. you can get them for under 400 from cdnn as the remington 799. add the bell and carlson carblite stock http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=368706 and you have a very nice little lightweight gun.

savage makes a good gun too, but their wood was too plain for me. and I"ve always liked the a-bolts.

my boss has the ruger m77 compact all weather. stainless 16" barrel, laminate stock, built like a tank, used and abused and still killing deer and hogs left and right.

http://forum.gon.com/showthread.php?t=402898#post3973354 Try holding 1 of these Mohawk 600 & see how it feels to you. This is the best i could do as far as getting a pic up. It is a 222 that can be mod to fire 223 or 5.56. i have the same rifle & my father did the mod job on it.
Out of 30+ rifles, its the 1 i would never let go of. Great lil rifles. They are not cheap. you will pay a few dollars for it & have to do some look-en around as well to find 1 you like. But its WORTH IT!!!!!

I can't believe no one has recommended the Savage Precision Carbine yet! Awesome trigger, you get the Accustock, 20" tube, 1 in 9 twist and only 7 lbs. seems to meet your requirements, plus its a Savage....no qualms here.

I would pick a CZ 527. It has a set trigger. I had been considering getting one, for awhile, in 7.62x39.

There's one like what I had been looking for (not in .223, sorry) in the classifieds of this board, but I don't got the $$$ right now. Really wish I did.
