Forcing cone cracks

I'd demand that S&W either put a new barrel on or else ship back. Keeping my gun isn't an option unless they'd like to talk to my State's Attorney General's fraud division.

If they won't (not a matter of "can't") replace the barrel then it goes back in MY safe until I can either find a gunsmith who can.

Once a firearm is received by S&W they are required to replace any firearm that is unrepairable under their own lifetime warranty policy. Even if the firearm is not being serviced under the "warranty" they can't return a damaged firearm to you due to their level of liability. Unless they render it permanently unservicable.
They may offer you a trade-in value for the firearm that they will be replacing, from the price of a new firearm.
Usually they just replace it.

S&W has a "repair or replace at their option" clause in their lifetime service warranty/policy.
Due to the seriousness and danger of releasing a firearm that they know is damaged beyond repair, they are responsible to replace it due to their level of liability.

As a consumer and owner of a S&W firearm you are required to honor their repair or replace policy and their disgression of its use, even if you disagree with its intent.

I have to believe you aren't going to find a barrel for that gun, there just aren't any left. The 696 was somewhat popular after production stopped, why I'll never know. I looked at one of these when they first came out and passed because of the thin forcing cone.

See what else S&W will offer you.

The forcing cone on my M10 cracked. K frames are well known for the problem. I think maybe it was lead build up at the forcing cone that caused it, from shooting lead. I shoot a lot of wadcutter loads and did in that gun along with the 158 SWCs. Hardly ever put a jacketed bullet through it.

Anyway, I found a 4" heavy barrel new for 50 bucks from J&G sales and had a smith put it on. He charged me less that 30 bucks as I recall and I've been shooting it ever since. So, figure I was out about 80 bucks and I got rid of that pencil barrel I didn't care much for, too. The heavy barrel balances better for me.
