I was just curious what the obsession is with foreign junk weapons. Why do people feel the need to have an AK-47 or a SKS??? What is the big deal, what makes them so special???

They work and they're cheap enough that anyone can own one.
Not everyone can afford an M1A...

All I can say is that if you really think they're just junk, you must be one inexperienced individual.

I bet most folks would choose the AK over the 10/22 given the choice.

I just like to blow the hell outa random crap I find Yaris cars to be particularly Appealing as they are onea the ugliest imports I've seen and ugly junk tends to attract 7.62x39 lead like a magnet even more effective if ya are loaded up with evil steel core chicom ammo which will help to penetrate the battery packs on most currently available hybrid type cars......... to that end I feel ya cannot really effectively accomplish proper liberal auto termination with anything less than 5K rounds and to keep from damaging a barrel those 5K rounds should be distributed across at least 100 assorted AKs this of course is only if my homemade pipe bomb yaris eradication system has failed

;)

I believe that the attraction is that there are lots of aftermarket parts that can be swapped out with absolutly no skill and the minimum of tools, resulting in what some precieve to be TactiCool. Another thing is that many surplus guns shoot relative cheap surplus ammo.

To customize an old Remington 721 for example, the sights might have to be removed, the bolt handle turned down, the barrel might have to be changed or re-chambered and some fancy figured monte-carlo stock would have to be fitted and finished. These things require skill and tooling that is often beyond what is required for putting a stock, a scope, a lizar a flashlight, a flash hider and a bipod on some military surplus "junk" rifles.

Besides that, when was the last time you saw Rambo or Chuck Norris with a Savage 110, a Remington 742 or a Winchester Mod 70?

Junk???Nope...not Camp Perry quality;but anything that I can use under rough conditions;afford to practice with and gives me decent down range performance is a useful item. Ther ARE mor erefined designs;but very few can rival them for robust reliability.Only after market work on my stuff is the old Williams aperture rear sight and a fiber optic front.
Besides;when you practice with an SKS or a Kalashnklone to the point of consistant skill;think of where your first "upscale" rifle will take you when you put in th ework.

Please... PLEASE continue talking badly about these guns and discouraging people from buying them.

:) Better prices for all of us Crufflers!

Hmmm...My SIG P229 has a German-made frame; must be junk. My Benellis are Italian, so they too must be junk. My Mosin is Russian, so it's most obviously junk. Dang! I have some junk guns! Oh, and I'm shopping for a junk AK right now. :scrutiny:

What would be a good price for a basic AK-47? I would love to get an AR-15, but they are a little pricey for me, right now.

a good price for a combloc junk weapon would be 399-500. high end 500-900 and 900+ for your milled weapons etc. price really varies on your area though. i know Aresenals run 1k plus in my area:barf:

Foreign weapons junk???
Far from it, I own several "junk" weapons and they happen to be among my favorite out of the lot. Plus, I would love to find a couple of K98's to add to the collection.
Mind you that some of the greatest shooting, most reliable weapons have be foreign and even copied with American rip-offs of the original goodness. Take the K98 action, compare to Remington and Ruger rifles now. Same action, but for several hundred dollars cheaper. Why would Remington and Ruger risk their namesake based on "junk" rifles.
Moving onto Semi's, SKS and AKs are a couple of the most feared weapons on the planet. A low recoil, 30 caliber bullet fired from a 6 pound rifle is pretty devastating backed with a 30 round magazine. AK's are over 50 years old...why would they still be current countries military rifles if they didn't do something right in the design of them?

I'm thinking of an AK-47 as an inexpensive alternative to an AR-15. What are the good manufacturers?

Not always cheaper than an AR, this Saiga I put together ran me almost $800

BUT to answer your question, the fact that I like it is reason enough!

Oh, and please try not to pick a fight..

I could just as easily pick a fight by saying that the AR is a jammomatic ice pick firing turd. But I wont, because I know its not true.

Yep, and I could say that the AK/AKM is nothing more than a glorified bullet hose,(which I often do:p), but the fact is I still own one and am not embarassed by this.

borntwice, both will work. There are those who will call both the Ruger and the AK inaccurate. The Ruger might not be a tack driver, and there are so many AK variants that some are bound to be more accurate than others. Both fire an intermediate "assault rifle" cartridge (5.56 for the Ruger, 7.62x39 for the AK).

The real question is whether or not ANY rifle that fires an intermediate cartridge is appropriate for home defense. Both 223/5.56 and 7.62x39 will make short work of common building materials and have the potential to do a lot of unintended damage to people and property beyond your target.

Of course, handguns and shotguns that are commonly used for home defense also have the potential to overpenetrate. I guess it's all about weighing the risks. At least a shotgun with the right load poses less of a threat to people in adjacent rooms.

Would I be better off going with a Mini-14, instead of an AK-47, for home-defense?
Having owned both, I'd say that either is a fine HD firearm, but .223 Remington is a better caliber for HD if you don't live in a rural area. Lightweight .223 JHP's penetrate even less in building materials than JHP's from most handguns do, and the 55-grain JHP's are IMO an excellent defensive round. Most 7.62x39mm will penetrate considerably more than a handgun, unless you mail-order some expensive JHP's or frangible rounds, or reload your own with varmint bullets.

Now, if you were comparing a .223 AK (SAR-3 with good magazines, Saiga with full-capacity magazines, etc.) to a mini-14, I think the AK is the better platform, personally.

I used to own both an AK (Romanian SAR-1) and a mini-14 Ranch Rifle. I sold the mini.
