Question about AK-47

I have a dumb question about the AK-47 and I searched and could not find it addressed on the site. (I know there are no dumb questions just dumb people.) Anyway from what I have read all of the guns that are classified as C&R and can be imported without being changed are over 50 years old (like the SKS). Will the AK ever qualify for this to lower their import cost since they wont need to be modified? Will Eastern European flood our streets with these lovely firearms from their arsenals when they need cash? Just curious.

1. Combloc AK's will never be imported without needing modifications for the simple reason that they are selective fire. They've effectively been prohibited from import (at least for sale to civilians) since the 1969 GCA.

2. The Eastern Europeans are already selling off lots of AK's cheap. I'm sure that many are going elsewhere in the world, but many more are coming here. They have to be de-milled to BATFE specs, first, which generally means destroying the receiver. You can then buy the "parts kits" for assembly on a dummy receiver, which results in a non-functioning "display only" firearm (not technically a "firearm", I guess). You can also use the parts kits to build a functioning semi-auto version on a U.S. made semi-auto receiver, provided you comply with 922(r) and have the minimum number of U.S. parts. There are any number of vendors out there right now selling guns made this way -- U.S. parts combined with imported AK parts kits to make a U.S.-legal semi-auto.
